PROJECT DUE AND ASSESSMENT OCTOBER 1

ALL MUST BE DONE BY HAND

1. Complete Part One – Locations. Label the locations in the list on the map labeled LOCATIONS.
a. Use an atlas or an online map source to label the locations. Do not use the list as a key. Do not assign
locations a number or letter or something similar and put them all in the key. Label them on the map by
hand. Be neat. Feel free to enlarge certain regions of the map in order to facilitate neatness. If it’s
illegible, I cannot give you points for it.

2. Complete Part Two – Read the article “Southernization” by Lynda Shaffer

a. Keep in mind this is sort of her DBQ essay; she is using historical facts to support her THESIS which is:
“Southernization” describes the process by which developments in Southern Asia spread to other
areas in the Eastern Hemisphere in the warmer latitudes causing changes in those societies and
resulting in a wealthier, more developed south in comparison to a poorer north. [Feel free to disagree
with any of the ways she uses historical facts to support her thesis or conclusions.]
b. NOTE: The article begins in the Classical era (600 BCE – 600 CE) but focuses mostly on the Postclassical
era (600-1450) and touches on the Early Modern era (1450-1750) so it is a good REVIEW for your next
test and midterm final.
c. Answer the Questions for Shaffer’s Article (1-36) BY HAND on a separate sheet of paper. You do NOT
need to write the question again. WRITE YOUR ANSWER IN COMPLETE SENTENCES.
d. TIP: As you read the article (either in sections or all at once) and highlight/underline the things that
diffused from one place to another as well as the trade routes they were spread through. This will make
Part Three easier!

3. Complete Part Three – the 2 Southernization Maps (see final page in this packet for suggested “chunking” for
this portion of the project)
a. First Map = Goods and Ideas
i. Expand the key as needed
b. Second Map – Trade Routes
➢ Make sure you use the correct color pencil/pen for the four sections.
i. Red = India
ii. Blue = China
iii. Green = Muslims
iv. Black = Mongols

You will hand in:

Part ONE (the answers to the questions over the Southernization reading)
Part TWO (the Locations Map)
Part THREE (Goods & Ideas Map AND Trade Routes Map)
DO NOT TURN IN the Southernization Article or any part of this instructions packet.

THEN, you will take the Assessment. Yeah, it’s a test over Southernization and all the stuff
you should have learned from this project…. SO DO IT WELL AND LEARN STUFF

below on the map provided. Some locations may overlap, use colors to shade in areas where overlapping occurs and
draw clear, concise borders as needed. You may even need to draw some locations on the map. Be sure to label

Part Three: Two Maps – Goods and Ideas - Trade Routes

The Indian Beginning

1. Read “The Indian Beginning” p. 2-8
2. Each time a good, idea OR DISEASE is mentioned, create a symbol for it in the key on the Goods and Ideas Map.
3. Then, place that symbol on the map in its place of origin. Your symbols must be colored.
4. Also draw RED lines on the map to indicate Indian and Malaysian trade routes on the Trade Routes Map.
5. Add and label your route color to the key.

The Southernization of China

1. Read “The Southernization of China” p. 8-11.
2. Each time a good, idea, OR DISEASE is mentioned, create a symbol for it in the key on the Goods and Ideas Map.
3. Then, place that symbol on the map in its place of origin. Your symbols must be colored.
4. Also draw BLUE lines on the map to indicate Chinese trade routes on the Trade Routes Map.
5. Add and label your route color to the key.

The Muslim Caliphates

1. Read “The Muslim Caliphates” p. 12-15.
2. Each time good, idea, OR DISEASE is mentioned, create a symbol for it in the key on the Goods and Ideas Map.
3. Then, place that symbol on the map in its place of origin. Your symbols must be colored.
4. Also draw GREEN lines on the map to indicate Muslim trade routes on the Trade Routes Map.
5. Add and label your route color to the key.

Mediterranean” p. 15-20.
