Chapter 07 Syntax
Subject – Verb – Agreement :- जब भी कभी कसी Sentence म Subject के Number तथा Person
के अनुसार Verb का योग हो वह Subject – Verb – Agreement कहलाता है |

1. य द Subject, Singular हो, तो Singular Verb, का योग कया जाता है |

2. य द Subject, Plural, हो, तो Plural Verb, का योग कया जाता है |

Singular Subjects Plural Verb

I, You, He, She Am, Is, Was, Has, Does, Writes, Drinks, Reads .
, It, Ram, Sita The boy, The girl .

Plural Subjects Plural Verbs

We, You, They, Ram and Shyam, Gita and Rita, The Are, Were, Have, Do, Write, Drink, Read .
boys, The girls .

Rule (1) :- य द कसी Sentence का Subject एक Singular Noun हो, तो इसके साथ Singular Verb का योग
होता है |

Example :- Rahul was always late.

Rule (2) :- ‘I’ (म) का योग Singular Subject के प म होता है, ले कन इसके साथ Singular or Plural Verb
का योग होता है |

Example :- I am a doctor. I was a teacher

S.S. S.V. S.S. S.V.

I have car. I write a poem.

S.S. P.V. S.S. P.V.

[Type (3) :- ‘You’ का योग Singular or Plural Subject के प म होता है, ले कन इसके साथ Plural Verb का
योग होता है |

Example :- You are a doctor. You are engineers.

S.S. P.V. P.S. P.V.

You come here . You were singing.

P.S. P.V. P.S. P.V.

Rule (4) :- Suppositional Sentence ायः if, as if, as though, if only, suppose, I wish, We wish, He
wishes, She wishes...... से टाट होते है, इससे कोरी क पना अस भव शत का बोध होता है | इन श द के बाद कसी भी
Number तथा Person के Subject का योग य नही हो, फर भी Plural Verb ‘were का योग होता है |

Example :- I wish i were a bird.

If he were a bird.

I wish Reena were my friend.

If he were my boss, he would suspend me .

Rule (5) :- Optative Sentence म Singular Subject के साथ भी Plural Verb का योग होता है |

Example :- Long live our friendship !

Rule (6) :- य द two Singular Nouns ‘and’ से जुड़कर Sentence के Subject के प म यु हो, तो इसके साथ
Plural Verb का योग होता है |

Example :- Sita and Gita have done well in the examination.

A boy and a girl love each other.

P.S. P.V.
Raj and Rahul are friends.
P.S. P.V.

Rule (7) :- Pair words (यु म श द ) जैसे – bread and butter, rice and curry, hammer and sickle,
slow and steady, truth and honesty, horse and carriage, crown and glory, rise and fall, coming and going,
screaming and shouting, age and experiance, eggs and bacon (सूअर का मांस), ham (बकरा का कु हा) and eggs,

 text]short, sum and substance, bag and baggage,....... etc का योग Sentence के

long प म होने पर, इससे एक ही
वा तु या भाव का बोध होता है, अतः इसके साथ Subject Singular Verb का योग होता है |

Example :- Slow and steady wins the race

S.S . S.V.
Bread and milk is my favourite breakfast.
S.S . S.V.
Rice and curry is a popular dish.
S.S . S.V.
Pen and ink is sold here.
S.S . S.V.

Note:- (1) य द दो Singular Uncountable Nouns ‘and’ से जुड़कर sentence के subject के प म यु हो तथा
इससे class का बोध हो तो इसके साथ Plural Verb का योग होता है |

Example :-
1. Time and tide wait for no man.
S.U.N S.U.N P.V.

2. Fire and water do not agree.

S.U.N S.U.N P.V.

3. Gold and silver are precious metals.

S.U.N S.U.N P.V.

Rule (8) :- य द दो Singular Nouns ‘and’ से जुड़े हो तथा first Singular Noun के पहले Article or possessive
Adjectives ( जैसे –my, your, our, .....etc. ) का योग हो, तो इससे same person अथात एक ि का बोध होता है |
अतः इसके साथ singular verb का योग होता है |

Example :- A black and white cow is grazing in the field.

S.S . S.V.

The Principal and secretary was there.

S.S . S.V.
(एक ही ि जो ाचाय और सिचव दोन है |)

My uncle and guardian has come to see me.

S.S . S.V.

( एक ही ि जो मेरे चाचा और गा जयन दोन है | )

A poet and philosopher has come.

Rule (9) :- And से जुड़े ए दोन Singular Nouns के पहले Articles or possessive Adjectives का योग होने
पर, इससे two defferent persons अथात दो अलग अलग ि य का बोध होता है | इसे Plural माना जाता है तथा इसके
साथ Plural verb का योग होता है |

Example :- :- A black and white cow Are grazing in the field.

S.S . S.V.
The Principle and the Secretary were there.
P.S. P.V
(दो ि िजनमे एक ाचाय और दूसरा सिचव है |)

My uncle and my guardian have come to see me.

P.S. P.V
(दो ि िजनमे एक मेरे चाचा और दूसरा गा जयन है |)

A poet and a philosopher have come.

P.S. P.V
(दो ि ज मे एक किव और दाशिनक है |)

Rule (10) :- य द दो Singular Noun ‘and’ से जुड़े हो तथा first Singular Noun के पहले each or every का
योग हो या येक Singular Noun के पहले each or every का योग हो, तो इसे Singular Subject के प म इ तेमाल
कया जाता है | अतः इसके साथ Singular Verb का योग होता है |

Example :- Every boy and girl was warned.

S.S . S.V.
Each pen and pencil is blue.
S.S . S.V.

Each pen and each pencil is blue.

S.S . S.V.

Every boy and girl is hardworkers.

S.S . S.V.

Every boy and every girl is hardworkers.

S.S . S.V.

Rule (11) :- ‘Each of / Either of / Neither of + Plural Noun / Plural Pronoun’ का योग Sentence के
Subject के प म हो, तो इसके साथ Singular Verb का योग होता है |

Example :- Each has come.

Each of these four pens is blue.

Rule (12) :- ‘Each’/ Every/ Either/ Neither + Singular Countable Noun’ का योग Sentence के Subject
के प म हो, तो इसके साथ Singular Verb का योग होता है |

Example :- Each girl was beautiful.

Either pencil writes well.
