1. Given a system with mass m and stiffness k1 having a natural frequency f1. It is
found that when a spring k2 is added in parallel with the first spring, the natural
frequency is doubled f2 = 2f1. Determine the stiffness of the second spring in
terms of k1.
2. If an unknown mass m is attached to a spring k, the natural frequency is 1.6 Hz.
If a mass of 0.5 kg is added to the first mass, the frequency of oscillation is
lowered to 1.25 Hz. Determine the unknown mass m and stiffness k.

3. The connecting rod shown below makes 65 oscillations in 1 minute when

pivoted from the small end and left to swing. If the rod mass is 2.2 kg, determine
its moment of inertia about its C.G.

4. The gear of mass 30 kg shown below is left to swing about a knife edge making
70 oscillations per minute. Determine the moment of inertia of the gear about its
geometric centerline.

c) Logarithmic decrement

the amplitude of first cycle to the amplitude of the fifth cycle is 6.4. Determine
the damping coefficient and damping factor given that the system stiffness k =

rotational stiffness K = 11.2 N.m, is given an initial displacement to oscillate.
The measured damped natural frequency was 5.6 rad/s and the measured ratio of
any two successive amplitudes was 3.7. Determine the flywheel moment of
inertia.
