Good night everyone!

Welcome back to BBC News Indonesia, where we bring you the most updated news from
around the world. I am Suci Maolida, and I will accompany you for the next few minutes.

This time we will be delivering shocking news from Myanmar. There was an earthquake in
Central Myanmar on Friday, March 28, 2025. According to data from the United States
Geological Survey, the earthquake had a magnitude of 7.7 on the Richter scale, shaking cities
across much of Southeast Asia as far as Bangkok, Thailand.

The earthquake occurred near Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city with more than one
million inhabitants, at around 12.50 p.m. local time. A 6.4 magnitude aftershock occurred 12
minutes later at a nearby location 60 kilometers away. Doublet earthquakes are two
earthquakes of the same magnitude that occur at relatively close times and epicenter
locations.

Reported by Agence France-Presse, Thursday April 3, 2025, a statement from a spokesman

for the Military Junta said as a result of this disaster there were 3,085 confirmed deaths. In
addition, 341 people are still missing and 4,715 people have been injured. However, the junta
has not explained the details of where the largest number of victims are.

Mr. Daryono, Director of Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency

(BMKG), said that the massive damage in Bangkok occurred due to the effects of long-period
vibrations that are prone to occur in places where the soil is soft and the layers are thick, such
as the characteristics in the capital city of Thailand. Based on the epicenter location and
hypocenter depth, this earthquake is a type of shallow earthquake due to the activity of the
Sagaing Great Fault. The results of the source mechanism analysis showed that this
earthquake had a horizontal or strike-slip mechanism. The intensity of the vibration can cause
damage to buildings, but the specific impact data is still being monitored. Modeling results
show that this earthquake has no tsunami potential. BMKG also told the public to remain
calm and not be influenced by issues that cannot be accounted for.
That concludes our report on the recent earthquake in Myanmar. We urge the public to stay
alert, verify any circulating information through official channels, and extend their support in
any way possible to those affected by this tragedy. I am Suci Maolida. Thank you for your
attention and for staying with us this evening. Stay safe, remain informed, and good night.
