1. You are provided with a measuring cylinder (250cm3) five 50g slotted masses and water.
Proceed as follows
(a) Pour water into the measuring cylinder to any level, but above 100cm of the
measuring cylinder as v0
(b) Slowly put the mass of 50g into the measuring cylinder while slanting, till is totally
immersed and then, note the new volume of water (v1) on upright standing of the
measuring cylinder. Obtain the volume of water immersed by (v1 – v0)
(c) Without removing the first mass, add another mass of 50g to obtain 100g, and
continue adding 50g masses to obtain a total of five readings and note the increasing
of volume of water in every addition of 50g mass by v1 – v0
(d) Tabulate your results as follows:

2. You are provided with a mass m, meter rule, knife edge, beaker with water, two pieces of
constantan wires, a 50g mass (m), B5 and vernier calliper.
Proceeds as follows

(a) Determine the centre of gravity, G of the metre rule.
(b) Measure and record the lenth, width and height of the mass B2.
(c) Balance the rule on the knife edge at G.
(d) Hang the unknown mass B5 at the distance d equals to 5cm. From the other end
of the metre rule, hang the known mass m (50g) and adjust its position until the
rule balances horizontally.
(e) Measure and record the distance d and d1 of B5 and m from G. Repeat the
experiment using the distance from G equals to 9, 13, 17 and 21cm.
(f) Repeat the whole experiment as shown in the figure, with mass B5 immersed into
a beaker with water and record the new distances, d2 of mass m from G.
Questions:
(i) Record your results in tabular form including the values of d (cm), d1 (cm), d2
(cm) and (d1–d2) (cm)
(ii) Plot a graph of d1 against (d1 -d2).
(iii) Determine the slope, S of the graph.
(iv) If R is the relative density of the mass m, show that d1 = R(d1 – d2).
(v) Determine the value of R.
(vi) Calculate the density and mass of the wooden block B2.
(vii) If the mass B5 is immersed in mercury, will it float or sink? Give reason.
(viii) State the principle governing to this experiment.

3. You are provided with five wooden blocks of different dimensions B1, B2, B3, B4 and B5,
a beam balance, meter ruler or plastic transparent ruler, Vernier calliper.
Procedure:
(a) Measure the mass of each wooden block by using a beam balance.
(b) For each mass of wooden block, use the dimensions of the block (Length, L, Width, w
and thickness, h) to find the volume of each.
(c) Prepare the table of results including mass (g) and volume (cm³) as shown below:

4. You are provided with unknown mass, B4, a knife edge, a 50g mass, vernier calliper, and a
metre rule. You are required to perform an experiment through the following procedures
(a) Find and mark the centre of gravity C of the metre rule AB by balancing it freely on a
knife edge.
(b) Place the metre rule on a knife edge at its centre of gravity C
(c) Suspend the 100g mass at x=10cm from the centre of gravity of the metre rule. suspend a
50g mass at a distance a=5cm from C on other side of C
(d) Suspend the mass B4 on the same side as the 50g mass and adjust it until the metre rule
balance horizontally as shown in figure below

5. You are given two objects of different masses labeled x and w. The mass of w is 100 g. but
the mass of x is unknown. You are required to perform an experiment to determine the
unknown mass x using a metre rule, two pieces of wire and knife edge.

6. You are given Wooden block labeled B2, slotted mass of 50g, metre rule and knife edge.
You are required to perform an experiment to determine the unknown mass B2 using metre
rule and evaluating density of wooden block.
Proceed as follows
(a) Set up the experiment as shown in Figure below
(b) Use a knife edge to find the centre of gravity of the ruler, and then label it as G
(c) Suspend 50g mass on 10 cm mark from G and adjust the position of the wooden block
(B2) on the other side of G so that the ruler balances in a horizontal position. Measure and

7. You are provided with metre rule, knife edge, a 250ml of plastic beaker, Liquid L, a 50g
mass, a 100g mass and two pieces of wire
Proceed as follows:
(f) Balance the metre rule horizontally by suspended it on knife edge as shown in
figure1
(g) Suspend the 100g mass from the metre rule at a point such that x =10cm from
centre G with the 50g mass completely immersed in Liquid L in the beaker, hang
the 100g mass from the metre rule and adjust its position until the system is in
equilibrium as shown in figure below:
(h) Repeat the procedures for value of x=15cm, 20cm,25cm and 35cm

8. In Mkali Food Industry Company (MFIC), you are given a task to determine the density of
Liquid L, you decide to perform an experiment by following the procedure:
(a) Balance the metre rule freely on a knife edge, to determine the centre of gravity G, and
take a beaker with liquid L given record its Initial volume (V1) and value of G
(b) Tie 100g slotted mass with wire given and suspend it at X=10cm from the centre of
gravity G.
(c) On the opposite side, suspend the 50g mass using another wire and completely
immersed in liquid L inside the beaker record new volume as (V2) as shown in figure
below.
(d) Adjust the position of the 50g mass inside the beaker containing liquid L until the
metre rule is balanced, record the distance from the pivot to 50g mass call it y.
(e) Repeat procedure (b) – (d) for value of X = 12cm, 14cm, 16cm and 20cm, for each
record its corresponding value of y.

(l) Use the value of slope in (iii) to determine the value of P and D from the following
