Part A – Warm Up (10 minutes)
Discuss briefly (in pairs):
1. What is an argumentative text?
2. Why do people write argumentative texts?
3. Can you give an example of a current issue that people usually debate about?
Part B – Reading Activity (15 minutes)
Read the text below carefully!
Topic: Should Students Wear School Uniforms?
Many people argue that school uniforms should be compulsory. They believe uniforms
create equality among students because everyone wears the same clothes, regardless of
their social background. Uniforms can also promote discipline and help students focus more
on learning instead of fashion.
On the other hand, some people disagree. They say uniforms limit students’ freedom of
expression. Without uniforms, students can show their individuality and creativity through
clothing. Moreover, buying uniforms may also be a financial burden for some families.
In conclusion, whether school uniforms should be mandatory is still debatable. Some see
them as a tool to reduce inequality, while others believe they restrict personal freedom.
Part C – Comprehension Questions (15 minutes)
Answer the questions below in your notebook:
1. What is the writer’s main argument in paragraph 1?
2. What is the opposing opinion in paragraph 2?
3. Which words show the writer’s conclusion?
4. Identify the structure of the text (Thesis – Arguments – Conclusion).
5. Do you agree or disagree with the text? Why? (2–3 sentences)
Part D – Language Focus (15 minutes)
Underline and write down 5 linking words/phrases from the text above that are used to
connect ideas (e.g., on the other hand).
Then, create 3 new sentences using those linking words.
Part E – Writing Task (35 minutes)
Write your own Argumentative Text (150–200 words).
Choose ONE of the following topics:
1. Online learning is better than traditional classroom learning.
2. Social media brings more harm than good.
3. Part-time jobs should be allowed for high school students.
Guidelines:
- Write in 3–4 paragraphs.
- Use the structure: Thesis → Arguments → Conclusion.
- Use at least 5 linking words (e.g., however, therefore, in addition, on the contrary, finally).
