Phonological Awareness: Sentence Segmentation


Remind children that sentences are made up of words. Say: I like my neighborhood. Tell children that there
are four words in the sentence. Hold up a finger for each word in the sentence. Tell children you will color
in four boxes to show that there are four words in the sentence. Then tell children to color in a box for
each word that they hear in the following sentences: 2. I have friendly neighbors. 3. The store opened.
4. Buy it! .

Phonemic Awareness: /d/


Point to and say the name of the picture of the desk. Tell children that the word desk begins with the /d/
sound. Have children repeat, desk, /d/. Now point to and say the names of the rest of the pictures on the
page. Tell children to circle the pictures that have names that begin with the /d/ sound as in desk. Tell
children to look at the pictures in each row from left to right and work their way down the page from top
to bottom.

Phoneme Segmentation
Tell children to listen as you say the word dot. Say each sound in the word dot, /d//o//t/. Blend the sounds
together to say the word /dooot/, dot. Explain that there are three sounds in the word. Now say the name
of each picture. Then tell children to say the sounds in each picture’s name. Encourage them to then count
the number of sounds they hear and color in a box for each sound.
