In this first practicum activity, we carried out demonstrations of three machines: the band
saw, the milling machine, and the lathe. Before starting the demonstrations, we gathered, formed
a line, and prayed together. After the prayer, we did some warm-up exercises to prevent our
muscles from becoming stiff while operating the tools or machines. Once the warm-up was
finished, our instructors, Ms. Ita and Mr. Insan, gave us a sheet containing the objects that would
be worked on in the next session. To prepare the materials, we were instructed to cut metal in the
form of cylinders and blocks. We used the band saw to cut the materials, adjusting the length
according to the given drawing, but with a little extra allowance in the measurements.
Switching to the material cutting process using a band saw machine. During the
demonstration, it was explained how to operate the machine. First, the emergency button must be
activated. Each machine has its own emergency button, which functions to automatically stop the
machine in case of an accident or can be pressed manually. After that, the machine can be
operated. Once the explanation was given, several group representatives began cutting their
materials according to the predetermined and agreed sizes. After the cutting process, the
materials were filed to smooth the sharp edges so they would not cause injury during the
upcoming practice.
In this turning machine demonstration, it is explained how to turn it on. The first thing
you have to do is turn on the socket at the back of the lathe, then turn the emergency button on
the front of the machine and turn on the machine by pressing the button to activate the machine.
Before we operate the lathe, we must first adjust the chisel/insert so that when turning the object
it is more centered. Before we operate it, we will be explained first by someone who is more
expert in using the machine. After we are explained by someone who is more expert, several
group representatives start trying to use the lathe. And most importantly, don't forget to use PPE
safety equipment for your own safety when using the turning machine.
And just like a turning machine, this milling machine demonstration also explains how to
start and operate it. The first thing to do is turn on the socket at the bottom of the machine, then
turn on the milling machine by pressing the on/off button. After that, set the drill bit and the
material to be used. Don't forget not to get too close to the rotary lever on the milling machine,
because if you get too close you could be hit by the rotation of the lever when using automatic
mode. And most importantly, don't forget to use PPE safety equipment for personal safety when
using the milling machine.
