A Critique into Organizational structure of the EVSU-Tanauan Campus
INTRODUCTION
Every university has a defined organizational structure meant to regulate the operations and
functions of its administrators. The organizational structure of Eastern Visayas State University Tanauan
Campus demonstrates a comprehensive approach to managing various aspects of university
operations. Each official has their respective office that suits their skill sets and expertise, which can have
a positive impact on the school's performance.
The administrative organizational structure shows the office of the university president as the
main organization that governs or implements tasks for the different branches of the office of the vice
president, which coordinates officials in establishing a planning and control system that considers several
factors, specifically complexity, centralization, formalization, and departmentalization. However, due to
the capacity of human resources at EVSU-Tanauan, they developed and revised the organizational
structure that is implemented or issued by the university president. For this reason, they eliminate from
the organizational structure those sections they consider redundant for university innovation. However,
despite these alterations, there is still disorganization since certain offices or sectors have been designated
to irrelevant divisions.
CRITIQUE
The administrative organizational structure of Eastern Visayas State University, Tanauan
Campus, is a well-designed structure that ensures a clear definition of authority and responsibility.
However, several potential flaws and space for improvement can be identified to enhance its effectiveness
and responsiveness to the needs of the university community.
Lack of academic focus, which prioritize administrative functions over academic leadership roles
and learning resource center. Affecting the quality of education and academic governance. Conversely,
the lack of leadership development initiatives could result in negative effects, for example, leader
ineffectiveness, and ennui (Morris and Laipple 2015).
The organizational chart shows potential redundancy in functions. For example, both the planning
office and maintenance, research, and development seem to address the management of innovation and
development functions, which might lead to overlapping responsibilities.
Lack of support services such as information technology and data privacy under the director of
EVSU-Tanauan Campus, which is vital to keeping data confidential and secure and preventing
unauthorized access that might lead to data breaching.
IMPROVEMENTS
To improve the divisional structure of the organizations at EVSU-Tanauan Campus, they should
be organized through entities such as the implementing office of the vice president for academic affairs,
where the registrar's office, cultural affairs and sports development, library services, and SASO should be
aligned. Furthermore, another division should be created for the office of Planning, Research, and
Extension Services, which combines the coordinators in the planning office and head maintenance as well
as the coordinators from extension services to establish a convenient and efficient organizational chart.
Balancing the representation of academic and administrative functions within the structure will align the
organization more closely with its educational mission. Lastly, establish a support system for the
development of information technology and data privacy that could also allow IT students to engage in
this field work inside the campus, which can enhance not only the university's data protection but also the
knowledge and skills of students with cybersecurity. An alternative to this recommendation is to hire
experts in this field.
