Science - Observing the Germination of Seeds at Home

Objective:

To observe and understand how seeds grow into plants through the process of germination.
This activity will help students learn about seed structure, growth conditions and plant
development.

Instructions:

1. Choose any one type of seed – kidney beans, green gram, or chickpeas.
2. Soak the seeds overnight in a bowl of water.
3. The next day, divide the soaked seeds into two groups:
o Place some seeds on moist cotton or tissue paper in a small plate or
container.
o Plant the rest in soil (in small pots or cups).
4. Water lightly every day and keep both setups in a well-lit area (avoid direct strong
sunlight).
5. Observe the seeds daily for 7–10 days and note any visible changes (e.g., sprouting,
root/shoot growth).
6. Click pictures of each stage.
7. On an A4-size sheet, draw neat, coloured diagrams showing the different stages of
germination (minimum 3–5 stages).
8. Label the parts of the seed/plant in your drawings:
o Seed coat
o Root (Radicle)
o Shoot (Plumule)
o Cotyledons (seed leaves)

What to Submit:

 Pictures clicked for each stage (Post on WhatsApp)

 A4-size sheet with labelled diagrams of the germination stages (coloured and neat).
 A few lines (4–6 sentences) or a small table describing your observations:
o Which seeds sprouted faster?
o What was the difference between seeds in cotton and soil?

Tips:

 Keep the cotton/tissue moist (not soaking wet).

 Observe daily and note any changes you see — tiny roots, shoots, leaves, etc.
 Use clear labels and colours in your diagrams.
 Be gentle when handling the sprouted seeds.

Mathematics: Monthly Bill Analysis – Real Life Math with Numbers!

Objective:

To apply mathematical operations such as addition, subtraction and average calculation

using real-life data, and to develop skills in data interpretation.

Instructions:

1. Collect any one kind of bill (Electricity / Water / Grocery / Internet) from your home
for 5 different months.
2. On an A4 sheet, create a table with the following columns:

Table Format (Common for All Bill Types):

| Month | Units / Items Purchased | Amount Spent (Rs.) | Avg. Price per Unit/Item (Rs.) |
Increase/Decrease (Rs.) | Cumulative Total (Rs.) |

Steps to Follow:
1. Month – Write the billing month (e.g., January, February…).
2. Units / Items Purchased –
o For electricity/water: write the number of units consumed (as shown in the
bill).
o For grocery bills: count the number of items purchased (e.g., rice, milk, bread
= 3 items).
3. Amount Spent (Rs.) – Write the total bill amount.
4. Average Price per Unit/Item –
Divide amount spent by number of units/items.
Example:
Amount ÷ Units/Items = Avg. Price per Unit/Item
5. Increase/Decrease (Rs.) –
Subtract the previous month’s amount from the current month’s.
Use + for increase, – for decrease.
Cumulative Total (Rs.) –
Keep adding each month’s amount to the total from the previous months.

Example Table 1: Utility Bill (Electricity)

Units Amount Spent Increase/Decrease Cumulative Total

Month
Consumed (Rs.) (Rs.) (Rs.)
January 120 units 520 — 520
February 130 units 560 +40 1,080
March 125 units 540 –20 1,620
April 140 units 600 +60 2,220
May 138 units 580 –20 2,800

Example Table 2: Grocery Bill

Items Amount Spent Increase/Decrease Cumulative Total

Month
Purchased (Rs.) (Rs.) (Rs.)
January 15 items 1,800 — 1,800
February 18 items 2,160 +360 3,960
March 14 items 1,680 –480 5,640
April 20 items 2,400 +720 8,040
May 16 items 1,920 –480 9,960

Calculations to Show Separately:

(Write Below the Table):

 What is the total amount spent over the 5 months?

 How many total units/items were purchased/used in 5 months?

 Which month had the highest bill?

 Which month had the lowest bill?

 In which month was the biggest increase or decrease in spending?

What to Submit:

 One neatly drawn table on A4 paper

 All calculations shown clearly
 Answers to the 5 questions above
 A few sentences explaining:
- What patterns you observed
- What might have caused the changes (e.g., more usage, special purchases)

(Additional) Graphical Representation (For Grade 7):

Create a bar graph on graph paper or A4 sheet to visually represent one of the following:

 Monthly amounts spent, OR

 Units/items consumed per month

Make sure to:

 Label the x-axis (Months) and y-axis (Amounts or Units/Items)

 Use a scale and neat bars
 Give your graph a title
 Use colours to make it clear and readable

Tips:

 Choose one type of bill and collect 5 monthly bills.

 Fill the table neatly with correct data.
 Label all units or items clearly (e.g., 120 units, 15 items).
 Show all calculations.
 Write answers to the questions in full sentences.
 Use a ruler to draw tables and graphs.
 Grade 7: Label axes and title properly.
 Double-check your work before submission.
