Differences between CAD and BIM:-
CAD is short for computer-aided design. It involves the use of computers on a
more technical level which help designers create virtual 2D and 3D designs. It
specializes in creating detailed 2D and 3D drawings to ensure more precise
designs in architecture, engineering, and manufacturing. It’s ideal for producing
floorplans, technical schematics and documentation, and detailed component
settings. To conceptualize, visualize, and analyze designs, creating detailed
technical documents and schematics.
BIM ,stands for Building Information Modeling, is an object-oriented building
development tool that utilizes 5-D modeling concepts, information technology and
software interoperability to design, construct and operate a building project, as well
as communicate its details. BIM uses digital information throughout a building's
entire lifecycle, going beyond just design to include data about materials, costs,
and scheduling. It allows a design idea to be visualized with realistic dimensions
from a multitude of angles.
Uses Of Each:-
Cad is used for smaller projects, detailed component design, product design or
when the focus is primarily on creating precise 2D drawings and technical
documentation while BIM is better for large, complex projects where detailed data
management, clash detection, collaboration, and a comprehensive view of the
project's lifecycle are crucial. BIM works on driving a project forward in an
efficient and collaborative way to save money in the long run by minimizing errors
in the design, installation, construction phase or even facility management phase.
CAD Software Programs:-
1-Fusion
It refers to Autodesk Fusion 360, a cloud-based 3D CAD, CAM, CAE, and PCB
software platform. CAD refers to Computer-Aided Design, CAM refers to
Computer-Aided Manufacturing and CAE refers to Computer-Aided Engineering.
They cover both 2D and 3D dimensions and move across mechanical, electrical,
and simulation aspects. Fusion is used by a wide range of engineers and designers
such as mechanical, manufacturing engineers and product designers. It is used
from concept to manufacturing stages including design, simulation, prototyping
and production.
2- Blender
It is used in technical workflows where visualization, animation, or artistic
modeling is important. Blender is focused on 3D modeling and some 2D
workflows like 2D animation. It is not typically used for engineering designs but
used by product and game designers. It is used in conceptual, visualization and
presentation phases.
3-SolidWorks
SolidWorks is a feature-based parametric CAD software designed primarily for 3D
modeling, but it also supports 2D documentation and analysis. Solidworks covers
2D drafting, 3D modeling, CAE, CAM and rendering. It is used by mechanical,
product, manufacturing and industrial engineers. It is used in multiple phases
starting from concept design phases to prototyping and manufacturing phases.
4-Tinkercad
Is a browser-based 3D modeling tool developed by Autodesk. It supports 3d
modeling and block based coding. It is used to convert 2D to 3D. It is not typically
used by professional engineers but is used by students, beginner designers and
electronic learners. It is used for educational reasons, not detailed engineering
work. It is used for early stages of design and concept modelling.
BIM Software Programs:-
1-Naviswork
Naviswork is a model review, coordination, and simulation platform. Navisworks
for BIM primarily reviews, combines, and navigates models from various
Autodesk 3D software. It is used for 3D model aggregation, data integration, 4D
and 5D simulation. Navisworks is mainly used by professionals in construction
management and multi-disciplinary engineering coordination. Navisworks is used
during the coordination, planning, and pre-construction phases — sometimes into
construction for monitoring.
2- Trimble connect
Trimble Connect is a cloud-based platform that provides a central location for
managing, viewing, and sharing construction data. It includes 3d model viewing,
2d document support and 4d planning. Those who could use it include MEP
specialists, subcontractors, architects, etc. Trimble Connect is used throughout the
entire project lifecycle, but especially for design coordination, pre-construction,
and construction execution.
3- Revizto
Revizto is a cloud-based BIM solution that helps architecture, engineering, and
construction professionals improve communication and project coordination. It
helps support and manage 2d,3d,4d and 5d project data. It is used among all
participants within a collaborative environment. Revizto is used from design
coordination through construction, all the way to handover — especially where
cross-discipline communication is critical.
4-Dalux
Dalux is a BIM software that helps with construction project management. It is a
cloud-based application that can be accessed from anywhere. The features of Dalux
include progress tracking, cost management, scheduling, and resource allocation.
Dalux covers multiple dimensions of BIM such as 2d and 3d, with a strong focus
on field collaboration, issue tracking, and model viewing. Dalux is used by both
design teams and construction teams, especially for field coordination. Dalux is a
versatile BIM solution that helps you manage all aspects of your construction
project from start to finish.
