2. Let a two-dimensional displacement field be given in the reference
configuration
u1 = -2a2, u2 = 2a1
(a) Determine the displacement field in the spatial configuration.
(b) Determine the right stretch tensor U, the proper orthogonal tensor R
and the left stretch tensor V using the polar decomposition theorem.
3. At time t, the position of a particle, initially at (𝑋1 , 𝑋2 , 𝑋3 ) is defined by
𝑥1 = 𝑋1 + 𝑘𝑋3 , 𝑥2 = 𝑋2 + 𝑘𝑋2 , 𝑥3 = 𝑋3 , 𝑘 = 10−5
a) Find the components of strain tensor.
b) Find the unit elongation of an element initially in the direction of 𝒆1 +
𝒆2 .
4. Given the displacement field 𝑢1 = 𝑘𝑋1 , 𝑢2 = 𝑢3 = 0, 𝑘 = 10−4
Determine the increase in length for the diagonal element (OA) of the
unit Cube in the direction of 𝑒1 + 𝑒2 + 𝑒3
5. Consider the uniform deformation of a square block of side 2 units and
initially centered at X = (0, 0). If the deformation is defined by the
mapping
χ(X) = (3.5 + X1 + 0.5X2 )e1 +(4 + X2)e2 + X3 e3,
(a) sketch the deformation, (b) determine the deformation gradient F, and
(c) compute the displacements.
6. If the deformation mapping of a body is given by
χ(X) = (X1 + AX2) e1 + (X2+ BX1) e2 + X3 e3,
where A and B are constants, determine
(a) the displacement components in the material description,
(b) the displacement components in the spatial description, and
(c) the components of the Green–Lagrange and Eulerian strain tensors.
