[Link] assumed mean method find the mean of the following data:

Class Frequency
5-10 5
10-15 6
15-20 15
20-25 10
25-30 5
30-35 4
35-40 2
40-45 2

Solution:

Class (CI) Frequency (fi) Class mark (xi) di = xi – a fi d i

5-10 5 7.5 7.5 – 27.5 = – 20 -100

10-15 6 12.5 12.5 – 27.5 = – 15 -90

15-20 15 17.5 17.5-27.5 = -10 -150

20-25 10 22.5 22.5-27.5 = -5 -50

25-30 5 27.5 = a 27.5-27.5 = 0 0

30-35 4 32.5 32.5-27.5 = 5 20

35-40 2 37.5 37.5-27.5 = 10 20

40-45 2 42.5 42.5-27.5 = 15 30

Total Σfi =49 Σfidi = -320

Assumed mean = a = 27.5
Mean of the data:

= 27.5 + (-320/ 49)

= 27.5 - 6.53
= 20.97
Hence, the mean marks of the students are 20.97.

Q2. The median of the following data is 41.5 and the total no. of observations is [Link] the
values of f1 and f2.

C.I. 10-20 20-30 30-40 40-50 50-60 60-70

F 4 28 f1 20 f2 16
Solution:
class f cf
10-20 4 4
20-30 28 32
30-40 x 32+x
40-50 20 52+x
50-60 y 52+x+y
60-70 16 68+x+y
68+x+y

68+x+y=100
x+y=32
f=20, h=10, cf=32+x, n/2=50

Median=l+( n/2−cf) /f ×h
41.5 - 40=(50−(32+x))/20×10
)

1.5=(18-x )/2

3=18-x
x=15
x+y=32, ∴y=32-15=17

Q3. The mean of the following data is 145 and the total no. of observations is [Link] the values
of f1 and f2.

C.I. 0-50 50-100 100-150 150-200 200-250 250-300

F 8 f1 32 26 f2 7

C.I Class Mark(xi) f fx

0-50 25 8 200
50-100 75 f1 75f1
100-150 125 32 4000
150-200 175 26 4550
200-250 225 f2 225f2
250-300 275 7 1925

Ʃf=100 Ʃfx=10675 + 75f1+225f2

In eq 1st multiplying by 75 than subtract

By solving equation, we get here

Now putting the value of f2=12 in eq 1st

Hence,

Q4. . Find the mode of the following data:

Expenditure No. of workers

0-5000 90
5000-10000 150
10000-15000 100
15000-20000 80
20000-25000 70
25000-30000 10
Here, class 5000-10000 has the maximum frequency, so modal class is 5000-10000
Now, l = 5000, h = 5000, f1 = 150, f0 = 90, f2 = 100

Q5. Find the median of the following data:

Marks No. of students

Less than 200 0
Less than 250 30
Less than 300 45
Less than 350 90
Less than 400 110
Less than 450 135
Less than 500 175
Less than 550 185
Less than 600 200

Class intervals Frequency (f) Cumulative frequency (c.f.)

200-250 30 30
250-300 15 45
300-350 45 90
350-400 20 110
400-450 25 135
450-500 40 175
500-550 10 185
550-600 15 200
N=∑fi=200
Here, N=∑fi=200∴N/2=100
We observe that the cumulative frequency just greater than N /2=100 is 110 and the
corresponding class is 350−400.
So, 350−400 is the median class.
∴l=350, f=20, Cf=90 and h=50
Now,
Median =l+(N / 2−Cf) /f×h
2/

⇒Median= 350 + (100-90)/ 20 X50 = 375

Q6. The marks obtained by 56 students in a school examination are given below:

Marks 200-220 220-240 240-260 260-280 280-300 300-320

No. of
7 3 6 8 2 4
students
Find the mode for the above data.

Here, class 260-280 has the maximum frequency, so modal class is 260-280
Now, l = 260, h = 20, f1 = 8, f0 = 6, f2 = 2

 260 + ((8-6)/16-8-2) x 20 = 260 + 20/3 = 266.66

Q7. Using the following data, find the median.

Height No. of persons

145-150 8
150-155 10
155-160 9
160-165 15
165-170 10
170-175 8

Height No. of cf
persons(f)
145-150 8 8
150-155 10 18
155-160 9 27
160-165 15 42
165-170 10 52
170-175 8 60

Here, N=∑f=60∴N/2=30
We observe that the cumulative frequency just greater than N /2=30 is 42 and the
corresponding class is 160−165.
So, 160−165 is the median class.
∴l=160, f=15, Cf=27 and h=5
Now,
Median =l+(N / 2−Cf) /f×h
2/

⇒Median= 160 +( (30-27)/ 15) x 5 = 160+1=161
