Windows 8 hasn't been as warmly received as its predecessor and Microsoft is hoping to ‘win over more PC users by addressing some of the most common complaints, Windows 8 introduced a number of new touchscreen-focused features, notably the Start screen, a series of tiles’ representing applications. While the design works well on tablets, it's loss Useful for people still on a standard PC with a keyboard and mouse, Another controversial chanse was removing the Start button ~ the Windows logo in the bottom left of the Desktop that gives access to ‘applications and settings. To address these criticisms, Windows 8.1 wil let you bypass the Start screen ‘and go directly to your Desktop, 50 you don't have to use the touchscreen oriented features if you're on an older PC. It’s also brought back the Start button - sort of. Previously, you had to nudge your 8 11 July 2013 ‘cursor into the corner of the screen to bring up settings, but there was no icon to tell you to do so. In Windows &.1, you ‘can press the button to bring up the Start sereen, which makes navigation a little easier. However, it doesn’t launch a Start menu of programs, as in previous versions of Windows, ‘Another major change introduced in ‘Windows 8.1is support for smaller tablets, to make it simpler to use the ‘operating system on devices that are Bin and smaller, Because larger tablets tend to be used in portrait mode, Windows 8's Start sereen scrolls horizontally, but Windows 8.1 wil rearrange application tles to work vertically, too. ‘Other new features include personalised backgrounds, such as animated wallpapers, and the ability to use the lock screen to show photos. This means that when your tablet or PC isn't being used, it effectively becomes a digital photo frame. Windows 8:1 also introduces Internet, Explorer Il, which includes a system to syne tabs across different devices (@ feature long available in Firefox and Chrome. ‘The update is free for Windows 8 and Windows RT users, and is expected to be released this autumn. The preview is available now via the Windows Store, ‘which will let you keep all your apps and settings in place. You can also download it from but this means youll need to reinstall your applications, The release of Windows 6.1 should be good news to all PC users. If you're already using Windows 8, come autumn you'llhave an improved operating system, with some of the irritating and awkward aspects ironed out. The Update will be distributed to computers and tablets automatically via the Windows Store, and it’s free, so you don't need to do anything to get it. If you haven't upgraded to Windows 8, your pationce has paid off While you continued to use the perfectly capable {and still modern-feeling Windows 7 (or even Vista or XP), Microsoft's developers have worked at improving Windows 8. This update is a classic case of why i's often wise to wait for version two of a tech product, be it hardware or software. We've always found Windows 8 abit of ‘8 mixed bag, with some obvious mistakes that should have been sorted ut before the Final release. We're pleased that the improvements Windows 8.1 applies to the operating system show that Microsoft is listening to its users and taking (relatively) quick action based on thelr feedback. We're also happy that the update is being issued to Windows 8 customers at no extra cost ‘Additionally, such regular updates are set to become standard, which means the 05 will keep getting better. That's not a bad deal at all, considering that ‘Apple charges Mac users to upgrade to new versions of OS X. Google to release new Nexus 7 aA First affordable 3D printer goes on sale What happened? Whether you're Using a fibre connection now or are thinking of switching from standerd ADSL in the future, having a router that will handle both is an asset, However, it takes more than Just a broadband port to make a device truly future proof, and unfortunately we found the Vigor 2760n lacking in several other key forward-thinking features. The ‘most glaring omission is an advanced Wi-Fi option. This router only offers standerd, single-band, 2.4GHz 802in wireless networking, with no ‘SGH2 dual-band and no 021ac, And although i's true that €02Tlac is stil in its early stages and hasn't yet been ratified as a standard (currently expected to be by the end of next year), there 20 11 July 2013 adapters from other manufacturers that already include it, such as the Netgear 6300, which won our [Link] router Group Test in Issue 314 ¢bitly/ webuser314. While buying a router with features that aren't yet standard might be risky, because you could end up with equipment that isn't compatible with the finished standard, it's disappointing ‘not to have the option, and doubly disappointing net to get @ SGHz 802.1In network to boost the speed of your network at short range. are routers and \ Build and design Externally, the router has plenty of useful features. Its four Ethernet ports are all Gigabit, so as long as the devices you're plugging in are compatible, you'll be getting ‘maximum performance out of your wired network. ‘The router's two USB ports make it very handy for plugging in peripherals, such 235 a USE printer, which you ccan make accessible to all the devices on your network. The set-up instructions in the Quick Start Guide are easy to follow, but it won't work with oy ea ‘an allin-one scanner and printer Ifyou set up a printer on tone USB port, you can use the other for storage - either by plugging in a USB memory stick to make a small sharing space for transferring files, by slotting in a USB hard drive to keep a store the back looks neater, but means you'll have to twist the router around to swap cables. Instead of icons and buttons, DrayTek uses text links and drop-down menus. The advantage ofthis Is that everything is kept compact and close to hand, and if you're tech savvy and prefer to have quick access to allthe available features, then you may find DrayTek’s interface preferable to more modern streamlined interfaces that hide a device's most complex tools from view. If you're not familiar with networking, though, the pages of acronyms and numbers wil be off-puttin, The router also comes with 2 web-fitering service that can be used to sift out Unwanted elements, such as adult content. Because it's controlled by the router, the filter wil work for every device on your network, so you dor't have to set up each individual PC. However, the content filtering is only available as 3 30-day trial, after which you'll have to pay £32.99 per year, which expensive. Performance The router performed impressively in our tests. We ‘compared it to@ standard ISP router, whichis typical of the kind of device that you might bbe wanting to upgrade from when you buy the 2760n. This particular unit, which is a ‘couple of years old now, sits in ‘the back corner of the ground floor of our test house, where ‘the phone line comes in. However its Wi-Fi signal fails, toreach the opposite corner ‘of the house on the frst floor ‘We tested the performance lf the network using PassMark PerformanceTest ([Link]), both in the same room and a distant room, close to the edge of the ‘existing Wi-Fi Blackspot. In the same room, the ISP router {achieved an average speed of 92.15Mbps. In the cistant room, it dropped to 729Mbps. We switched the routers cover, so the DrayTek router ‘was located in the same place {as the ISP router. This produced a huge improvement in the network speed. n the same room, the DrayTek router got an average speed of 161,7Mbps - nearly twice as fast as our ISP router. Ata distance, the speed was also improved, with an average of 31.67Mbps. ‘Our alternative routers (eee below, right) are more ‘expensive than the £143 2760n, but considering the ‘extras they provide, we think they are better value for money, OUR VERDICT You'd expect a router that ‘can handle both ADSL and fibre-optic broadband to be fast, and the Vigor 2760n doesn’t disappoint. It was {a vast improvement over ‘our existing ISP router, sending a powerful 2.4GHz WI-FI signal into the far corners of our test house and eliminating the blackspots that our standard ISP router falled toreach. ‘While the single-band Wh-Fi was fast in our tests, we think it's a major drawback that Draytek didn’t include the option of dual-band, which can FEATURES. oko PERFORHINCE okckook: EREOFISE — okeioin YVAWEFOR NONEY Adc increase short-range speed in congested environments.
