Global A Potential Hub To Deliver Dynamic Professionals.

Exercise #01

A flow of 90.42 tons/hour of water at 30 °C is to be pumped. The suction pressure is 1

bar, and the required pressure rise across the pump is 4 bar.

(a) Calculate:

 The power required if the pump efficiency is 70%.

 The discharge pressure.
 The head developed.
 The NPSH available.

(b) After completing the simulation, your supervisor provides you with the actual pump
characteristic curve of the pump installed in the field.

Flow (USGPM) Head (ft) Efficiency (%)

0 275 0
100 260 42
200 235 60
300 190 66
400 150 70
500 140 75

 Will this pump be able to achieve the required outlet pressure?

 Determine the revised power requirement based on the actual pump curve.

Solution:
Initial Case – Fixed ΔP Approach

Step 1: Convert Flow Rate

At 30 °C, water density ≈ 1000 kg/m³

Step 2: Discharge Pressure

Step 3: Head Developed

Step 4: Hydraulic Power

Step 5: Shaft Power (with efficiency 70%)

Now, solve the same case by using Aspen Hysys software.

 Start a New Case and Add componentWater

 Fluid Package select IAPWS-IF97

 Go to Simulation Environment and define the Material Stream

 Add the Pump to the flowsheet from a Model Palette.

4|Page

 Double click the Pump icon and define the Connections

 Navigate to Parameter option and enter Delta P 4 bar and Efficiency 70% as per
example data.

 On the basis of above result the Required Duty is 14.415 kW

 Navigate to Performance tabHead Developed is 40.97 m

 Navigate to Worksheet Outlet Pressure is 5 bar

6|Page
Global A Potential Hub To Deliver Dynamic Professionals.

 Navigate to Rating option- NPSH Option NPSH Available is 18.22 m

 Now, introduce the Performance Curve. Go to Rating option CurvesAdd Curve

Note: Before using the curve, go to Design Option  Parameters and remove the
Efficiency and Delta P Values.
 Now, from Rating option Enable Use Curves option.

 Click Plot Curves button to view the plot.

 Navigate to Design option  Parameters the Required Duty is 16.095 kW, Delta P
4.466 bar and the Efficiency is 70%.

9|Page
Global A Potential Hub To Deliver Dynamic Professionals.

 Navigate to Performance option the Head Developed is 45.74 m

 Navigate to Worksheet Discharge Pressure is 5.466 bar

 Navigate to Rating option- NPSH Option NPSH Available is 18.22 m same as

the previous case.

Comparison:

Parameter Initial Case (Fixed ΔP) Actual Curve Case (Vendor Data)
Power Required 14.42 kW 16.10 kW
Pump Efficiency 70% 70%
Discharge Pressure 5.0 bar 5.47 bar
Head Developed 40.97 m 45.74 m
NPSH Available 18.22 m 18.22 m

Conclusion:

The installed pump is suitable for the service and will achieve the desired discharge
pressure without the need for a new pump. However, the motor/driver must be sized for
the higher duty (16.1 kW instead of 14.4 kW) to ensure reliable operation under actual
conditions.

Testimonials
Here's what some of our previous clients have said about the impact of our training
programs.

I took the Process Design Engineering (ENG 101) after finishing the Aspen Hysys Basic
class. During this half-month class I got and learnt a lot of very useful and practical
knowledge about the oil &gas process design and simulation. The module materials are
very informative and well organized which make me very easy to understand. Also thanks
a lot to my instructor Jenny for her patience to answer any doubts I have during the class.
Furthermore the supplementary material for each module is very helpful to give me more
detailed information about each module content. In general I am very satisfied and
comfortable with this class and it is beyond my expectation.

HYSYS offered here is a Great course for new engineers and great refresher for the
experienced people.....Do it if you are looking for Value for your Money!!
- ANKIT VYAS
Process Engineer, Calgary ( Canada )

My co-worker and I took the Process Simulation & Modeling Aspen Hysys Advance course.
It was a very useful and interesting course, and the instructors were very flexible to adapt
the topics and schedules according to our needs.
- Facundo Sala
Process Engineer (Buenos Aires) Argentina

Great course. My instructor did his best to make sure, I understood everything.

Thank you so much for what has been an extremely valuable training course. You people
were amazingly good! I wanted to tell you that your course outlines are very
comprehensive. By starting off with your goals for the course, students are very clear as
to why they are in your classes, and why they are studying Process Engineering.
- Chandrakala Radhakrishnan

The digital information and supporting documents provided by the instructor were
valuable for better understanding of the course. The instructor always cordially answered
all the question that I came in with during the course.
- Ana Maria Ortiz
Process Engineer Calgary, Canada

It was really good experience of online leaning of HYSYS. Classes were fully interactive
with enough time for clarifications. It is a good opportunity for working professionals as
essay to manage classes, learning at the same time to practice on real cases.
