Homework 1

1. Find the directional derivative of the function 𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦) = 4𝑥 + 𝑥𝑦 2 − 5𝑦 at the point (3, −1) in
𝜋
the unit vector direction, 𝜃 = 4

2. Consider the rectuangular plate shown in figure 9.29. The temperature at a point (𝑥, 𝑦) on the
plate is given by 𝑇(𝑥, 𝑦) = 5 + 2𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 . Determine the direction an insect should take,
starting at (4,2), in order to cool off as rapidly as possible.

3. Find an equation of tangent plane to the graph of the equation, 5𝑥 2 − 𝑦 2 + 4𝑧 2 = 8, at the

point (2, 4, 1).

4. Find the curl and divergence of the given vector field:

𝑭(𝑥, 𝑦, 𝑧) = 10𝑦𝑧𝒊 + 2𝑥 2 𝑧𝒋 + 6𝑥 3 𝒌

5. Evaluate whether the given vector field is conservative vector field (hint: 𝑐𝑢𝑟𝑙𝑭 = 0).
𝑭(𝑥, 𝑦, 𝑧) = 𝑦 2 𝑧 3 𝒊 + 2𝑥𝑦𝑧 3 𝒋 + 3𝑥𝑦 2 𝑧 2 𝒌
