INTRODUCTION
DRAWING

The way of conveying the ideas through the systematic lines on the
paper. The art of representation of an object by systematic lines on
a paper.

ARTISTIC ENGINEERING DRAWING
The art of representation of an object Engineering drawing is the language for
by the artist by his imagination or by Effective Communication among
keeping the object before him. engineers which elaborates the details
e.g. paintings, cinema posters, of any component, structure or circuit
advertisement boards, etc. at its initial drawing through drawing.

DRAWING INSTRUMENTS
The instruments used in engineering drawing are:
 Drawing sheet
 Drawing board
 Mini drafter
 Eraser
 Pencils
 Protractor
 French curves
 Templates
 Paper Holders
 Set squares
 Compass
 Divider
Drawing Sheet:
Drawing sheet is a white paper on which an object is
drawn which is available in various sizes as shown
below.

TITLE BLOCK
STANDARDS
BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards SP 46: 2003) defines dimension as a numerical value
expressed in appropriate units of measurement and indicated graphically on technical
drawings with lines, symbols and notes. ...
In civil engineering and architectural drawing, inch or foot is often used as a unit of
length
DRAWING PENCILS:
The appearance & accuracy of a
drawing
depends on the quality of the
drawing pencils

LETTERING
LETTERING (BIS: 9609)
 Lettering is used for writing of titles, sub-titles, dimensions, scales and
other details on a drawing.
 Essential features of lettering – legibility, uniformity, ease, rapidity, and
suitability for microfilming/photocopying/any other photographic
processes
 Lettering should be done with dark pencil such as 2H or HB.
 Single stroke letters are simplest form of letters and are used to write
titles, dimensions, notes and other information on a drawing.
Lettering using single stroke letters has been recommended by Bureau
of Indian Standards (BIS) and described in IS:9609-1990.
 The word “single stroke” indicates that the thickness of lines used in
letters should be such as obtained in single stroke of pencil.
 Lettering A – Height of the capital letter is divided into 14 equal parts
 Lettering B – Height of the capital letter is divided into 10 equal parts
h-Lettering height
c1 - height of lower case letters
c2 - Tail of lower case letters
c3 - Stem of lower case letters
a – spacing between characters
b1 – Minimum space between baselines
b2 – Minimum space between baselines
e – Spacing between words
d - Line width

EXERCISE-1
Sentence Composition

ALL DIMENSIONS ARE IN mm

LINES
A line is one important aspect of technical drawing. Lines are
always used to construct meaningful drawings.
Various types of lines are used to construct drawing, each line
used in some specific sense. Lines are drawn following standard
conventions mentioned in BIS (SP46:2003).
A line may be curved, straight, continuous, segmented. It may be
drawn as thin or thick. A few basic types of lines widely used in
drawings are shown in Table.
EXERCISE-2
EXERCISE-3
DIMENSIONING
 In order to describe any object or drawing technically, it is required to show all
the measurements on it.

 Dimensioning provided through the distances between the surfaces, location of

holes, nature of surface finish, type of material, etc.

 Placing details such as length, breadth, height, thickness of objects,

diameter/radius of holes, slots, grooves etc., is known as dimensioning.

 Dimension line is a continuous narrow line drawn parallel to the edge or surface
whose to be measured.

 Dimension should be placed outside the view.

 Dimension line is placed 6 to 10 mm away from the border of the drawing.

METHOD OF DIMENSIONING:
There are two types of dimensioning:
 Aligned dimension method, and
 Unidirectional dimension method.

2. Read the dimension and redraw the given sliding plate as per BIS code.
