Today, I will analyze the film Girl, Interrupted.
My objective is to evaluate the accuracy of
the portrayal of borderline personality disorder (BPD) and depression as exhibited by the
main character, Susanna Kaysen, by comparing cinematic representation with
documented clinical research and case studies. My approach will branch from the field
of health and development and mainly focus on mental health and wellbeing. This
perspective enables a thorough comprehension of the effects of psychological
disorders and how accurate cinematic representations contribute to or distort real-
world mental health challenges.
The research question guiding this analysis is: To what extent does the portrayal of
Susanna in Girl, Interrupted accurately depict the clinical symptoms of borderline
personality disorder and depression in female adolescents when compared with
documented research? The hypothesis suggests that the film presents a depiction of
these disorders that aligns with certain clinical criteria.
Films have a significant influence on public perception of mental health conditions. By
analysing Girl, Interrupted, which is widely regarded as a cultural reference for
discussions on psychiatric disorders. This analysis is particularly significant in the
context of health and development, as mental health plays a crucial role in overall well-
being, especially for adolescents and young adults.
To begin with, I will explore the intersection of thematic portrayal and clinical reality of
health disorders, focusing on the film “Girl, Interrupted.” The first step I would take is to
begin with a comprehensive analysis of the movie, paying particular attention to the
depiction of borderline personality disorder (BPD) and depression in the main character,
Susannah. I will then follow it with a literature review in detail regarding the clinical
cases or case studies on BPD, depression, or any other mental health disorders
portrayed in the movie, associated with young females. I will write the essay to provide a
comparative analysis wherein I will highlight the depictions of these disorders in the film
and match them to real-life key clinical studies in young female adolescents. The essay
will provide the similarities and differences with possible inaccuracies in how they have
portrayed the disorders in the film. It is against the background that the validity and
resonance of “Girl Interrupted” as a cultural reference point for understanding disorders
or mental health come under critical consideration in this essay through a multifaceted
approach, grounded in empirical psychological research.
The film also presents depression through Susanna’s experiences, but it may not fully
encapsulate the complexity of the disorder as understood in clinical settings.
In conclusion, this research highlights the importance of comparing media
representations with evidence to ensure an accurate understanding of psychiatric
disorders. By examining the film from a health and development perspective, we can
better assess its impact on public understanding of mental health .
