CHAPTER-2
BACKPACKING CULTURE

In 1992, the travel & tourism industry became the world’s largest economic sector. The
extraordinary growth in tourism raises questions about the extent and pace of travel
throughout the world and the economic, political, cultural, and ecological effects of that
travel. A particularly important dimension of tourism is youth travel, which is growing
rapidly in the form of backpacking. In this form of travel, travellers basically undertake long
term journeys on low budgets, with a solitary backpack.

Backpacking culture has its roots in the mid-20th century, primarily in Europe and North
America. It emerged as a way for young travellers to explore the world on a budget,
immersing themselves in different cultures and seeking unique experiences. The post-World
War II era saw an increase in international travel, and backpacking became a popular
alternative to traditional tourism. It was fuelled by the desire for adventure, freedom, and a
deeper connection with the places visited. Over time, backpacking culture spread globally,
with people from all walks of life venturing off the beaten path, exploring remote
destinations, and connecting with fellow travellers through word-of-mouth recommendations.

Primarily backpacking is a post-modern phenomenon, a culture that contains a big post-

modern characteristic: high mobility. Backpackers, and the backpack itself, symbolize
mobility. It represents physical mobility as backpackers can carry all their essential
belongings on their back, enabling them to move freely without being tied down by bulky
baggage or reliance on fixed transportation routes. This may not necessarily be accessible by
other means of travel. Moreover, backpacking embodies the concept of emotional and mental
mobility. By embracing a minimalist lifestyle, backpackers open themselves up to new
experiences and perspectives. They learn to adapt to different cultures, languages, and
environments, fostering a sense of openness and flexibility. This helps backpackers navigate
unfamiliar situations with confidence and resilience.

The backpacker culture establishes itself as an identity making exercise, embracing individual
freedom. It allows a one to choose their own path and follow one’s passions. Unlike
traditional tours with planned itineraries, backpacking allows individuals to create their own
adventure. This autonomy fosters a sense of empowerment and self-discovery. Therefore, a
study of the scarcely researched backpacker culture may enable a better understanding of our
present and future.

9|P a g e
This research project aims to understand the customer behaviour, satisfaction, and budget
during their experiences as a backpacker and the means by which this could be developed
further, to provide a better loyalty in the case of backpacker tourists.

Hostel accommodation is related to budget-oriented, shared, or private dormitories, catering

to both solo and group travellers. Initially backpackers would have very short and shy trips.
The newly active hostels seeming daunting to the backpackers, but they found the pocket
friendly prices convenient. The facilities and amenities would be basic; a bed, bathroom and
sometimes breakfast.

Backpackers’ primary point of identification is their culture where socialisation brings a sense
of belonging to an emotional community. With the advent of technology and the rise of social
media, backpacking has become more accessible and interconnected. Travelers now rely on
online platforms, travel blogs, and social media to plan their trips, find accommodation, and
discover hidden gems. This digital age has made it easier to connect with like-minded
backpackers, share experiences, and seek real-time travel advice. Additionally, there has been
a growing emphasis on sustainable and responsible travel practices, with backpackers
becoming more conscious of their impact on the environment and local communities.
Overall, backpacking culture continues to evolve, adapting to the changing times and
embracing new ways of exploring the world.

A common misconception about backpacking is that it suits only the young travellers. The
reason for this is that youth is easy to influence. But it has been observed that travellers of all
ages enjoy backpacking. Older individuals tend to have more knowledge and enjoy the
flexibility, making it easier for them to navigate the trip, having a deeper appreciation for the
cultural and historical aspects and a bigger budget. Backpacking also relieves individuals
from the stress and hustle-bustle of everyday life, giving them a chance to reconnect with
nature. As backpacking is a social activity, older individuals may find it easier to interact with
people from diverse backgrounds and forge new friendships, appreciating the camaraderie.

A traveller can go backpacking solo or in a group. Backpacking solo offers a unique and
enriching experience. While the idea may seem daunting at first, but the rewards outweigh
the personal growth. The backpacker culture strongly impacts an individuals’ sense of self-
identity. Through transformative experiences, exposure to diverse environments, people, and
perspectives. Immersive travelling, individuals engage in self-reliant activities, navigate
unfamiliar situations, challenges, thereby fostering personal growth, resilience, and

11 | P a g e
adaptability. Interactions with varied cultures and communities prompt introspection and
reflection on one’s values, beliefs, and identity, leading to a deeper understanding of oneself
and one’s place in the world. Consequently, backpacking culture serves as a catalyst for self-
exploration, identity formation, and the cultivation of a more nuanced and interconnected
sense of self within the broader global context.

Backpacking can be highly beneficial as a group activity, fostering teamwork, camaraderie,

and shared experiences. Safety and support are paramount considerations when venturing into
unknown expeditions and group backpacking offers added layers of protection. Travellers
with a group provides a safety net, with multiple sets of eyes and hands available to watch out
for each other and offer assistance in case of emergencies. It is a great way to share skills,
knowledge, and resources. Distributing weight of shared gear, coordinated itinerary, sharing
stories, creates moments of laughter and camaraderie. With encouragement from peers,
individuals are inspired to push their limits and achieve their goals.

How has backpacking emerged as a popular style of travel?

One of the most influential mediums in shaping perceptions and inspiring to go for
backpacking is the silver screen. Movies and TV shows depict backpacking as a thrilling
adventure of self-discovery. Many make use of social media platforms like Instagram,
YouTube to document their backpacking trips to exotic destinations, through captivating
photos, engaging videos, and personal narratives, inspiring followers to embark on their own
adventures. The relatability of these influencers has inspired many backpacking trips.

Travel magazines and websites serve as a valuable resource for information, practical advice,
guidance, and recommendations. These publications feature comprehensive, first-hand,
insightful articles, interviews, and reviews. Documentaries and reality-shows showcasing
backpacking feature real-life stories and challenges faced by travellers, offering an authentic
portrayal. Through movies, TV shows, travel blogs, social media, documentaries, and
advertisements, mass media has elevated backpacking from a niche activity to a mainstream
phenomenon, by highlighting the thrill of exploration, beauty of nature and transformative
power of travel.

Benefits of backpacking:

Backpacking offers a multitude of benefits that extend beyond mere travel. Backpacking
enhances personal growth and promotes cultural immersion.

1. Boosting local economies: Authentic interactions with local communities by staying

in homestays, visiting local markets, develops a deeper appreciation for the rich
tapestry of human experiences and boosts the local economy. Asking for
recommendations or simply trying to understand their traditions and customs is a
great way to create meaningful connections. Rightly said, the way to win someone
over is food. Exploring the local food scene, visiting local markets or street food stalls
is a great way to get the authentic flavours and culinary traditions of the region. Any
popular tourist will have various festivals or events, attending these can give a great
insight and experience of the local arts, music, dance, or crafts.
2. Cultural Immersion: Social influences on backpacking are every strong. Making new
friends and socializing is central to this whole culture. Backpacking promotes cross-
cultural understanding and friendship through meaningful interactions with fellow
travellers from different backgrounds. The shared dormitories, common areas
facilitate this social interaction, to accelerate their cultural learning. Chance
encounters spark conversations, creating a sense of community among backpackers,
transcending cultural barriers. This explains why the social atmosphere and activities
that the accommodation provides is important. The main reason for choosing hostel
accommodations is the social interaction and not only the low prices. Immersion in
different cultures, interaction with locals, and a deep appreciation for diversity fosters
empathy, tolerance, and a broader perspective on the world.
3. Personal growth: Backpacking also encourages self-discovery and personal growth as
individuals step out of their comfort zones, face challenges, and learn to adapt to new
environments. It promotes independence, resilience, and problem-solving skills.
4. Economical: Backpacking has long been celebrated for its affordability. Backpacking
has a cost effective due to the low-priced accommodations, such as hostels,
guesthouses, and campsites. They offer affordable rates compared to traditional hotels
and resorts. As backpackers rely on public transportation, they avoid high costs
associated with rental cars or private transfers, fulfilling environment saving practices
and being easy on the pocket.

13 | P a g e
5. Sustainable Approach to Travel: Backpacking offers a sustainable approach to travel.
Backpackers typically travel light, carrying only essential gear and supplies. Relying
on public transportation or walking, reducing their carbon footprint associated with
transportation, minimizing the use of fossil fuels, and reducing greenhouse gas
emissions.
6. Promotes minimalism: Backpacking promotes a minimalist lifestyle, encouraging
travellers to pack light and prioritize essentials over non-essentials. By traveling with
just a backpack, travellers can avoid checked luggage fees, reduce the risk of
overspending on unnecessary items, and enjoy greater mobility and flexibility during
their journey. This minimalist approach to travel not only saves money but also
promotes a sense of freedom and independence.

A Basic Backpacking Guide:

1. Planning: Backpackers may consider their budget, climate, attractions, transportation

options while picking a destination. Itineraries are tailored to suit a backpacker’s
individual travel goals.
2. Determining budget: Backpackers set budgets to determine how much they can afford
to spend on accommodation, transportation, meals, activities, and other expenses.
Budget may vary depending on the length of the trip, cost of living in the chosen
destination and personal spending habits.
3. Choosing accommodation: Depending on preferences and priorities, backpackers may
opt for budget-friendly accommodations that offer basic amenities. Hostels,
homestays, and guesthouses are safe and budget-friendly accommodation options.
4. Choosing transportation: Backpackers also research transportation options for getting
to and around their chosen destination. Depending on factors like cost, convenience
and accessibility, backpackers may choose the most efficient and affordable
transportation, from a variety of modes, planes, trains, buses, or boats.
5. Packing ‘The Backpack’: After careful planning, backpackers pack essential gear and
supplies for their journey. Backpacking gear typically includes items such as a sturdy
backpack, food, water, first aid, navigation tools and personal hygiene items.
6. Fixing the itinerary: Although backpackers like to remain flexible and adaptable
throughout their journey, they do plan effectively and stay open to new experiences.

BACKPACKING CULTURE IN UDAIPUR

A 16th-century city in the heart of Rajasthan, founded by Maharana Udai Singh, Udaipur is
enchantingly regal in historic splendor and immensely rich in heritage, myths, legends,
culture and leisure adventure. Udaipur served as the capital of the Mewar Kingdom, resisting
numerous invasions with steadfast courage. Renowned for its legendary rulers, such as
Maharana Pratap, and its patronage of art, culture, and architecture, Udaipur flourished as a
center of Rajputana glory.

Nestled in the Aravalli Range of Rajasthan, India, which posed as a natural fortress, this
majestic city boasts opulent palaces, serene lakes, and ornate temples. The shimmering
waters of Lake Pichola mirror the grandeur of the City Palace, while the tranquil ambience of
Jag Mandir Island offers a sanctuary for contemplation. Meandering through the streets of the
old city, adorned with vibrant markets and colorful havelis, unveils a tapestry of Rajasthani
culture and hospitality. Udaipur is a city filled with valor, romance, and royalty. Also known
as ‘The City of Lakes’, ‘The City of Romance’ and ‘Venice of the East’.

“Tourists flock here in the thousands every year,” boasts a recent guidebook to the city, and
far from exaggerating, this greatly understates the case. It is a safe assumption that, at the
time of this writing, at least two million visitors pass through and around this nine-acre spot
every year.

Tourists come to Udaipur, because, above all, the city is surrounded by water, very
contrasting to the idea of a city in Rajasthan, and its location near the desert. Sometimes, they
are surprised at just how much water they see. It is surrounded by 7 lakes, all the lakeshores
being lined with ghats, hotels, temples and many of the city’s famous sights and stories. Most
visitors are in Udaipur for too short a time to see much of the city anyway and are unwilling
to pass up its most famous central monuments to spend their brief stay looking at some
lesser-known attractions.

Udaipur, being a city alive with regality, has always posed as a luxury tourism destination.
Luxury travelers are indulged with world-class accommodations in heritage hotels, where
impeccable service and sumptuous amenities abound. Exclusive experiences such as private
boat cruises on the lake, bespoke culinary journeys, and curated heritage tours elevate the

20 | P a g e
Udaipur experience to unparalleled heights of luxury. Timeless elegance, cultural richness,
and unmatched hospitality, makes Udaipur stand as a beacon of luxury tourism in India.

With Taj taking over the famous Lake Palace, an 18 th century palace, in the 1970s, Udaipur
gained international fame primarily due to its portrayal in the James Bond’s “Octopussy”.
Additionally, the city’s emergence as a favored location for elite weddings further solidified
its reputation, attracting a discerning clientele eager to immerse themselves in the regal
splendor and timeless allure. Word-of-mouth recommendations and travel experiences made
popularity surge among Gujaratis. Due to its proximity and cultural resonance with Gujaratis,
Udaipur turned into a preferred vacation destination, and as a result, became synonymous
with luxury getaways.

There has been an exponential growth in the luxury tourism sector, which is an effect of
massive globalization and changes in consumer behavior. Luxury tourism is not only seen as
desired and desirable, but it is rather a possibility to occasionally allow the best for oneself.
There is a focus on comfort, service, and style, on the other hand, there is a search for a
connection with the territory, and an effort to propose full emotional and intense tourism
experiences. The contemporary traveller is no longer interested in classic destinations and
locations, but in engaging, new, and unique destinations, where experiences, images, and
memories are factors that matter.

This rigour for new experiences, memories and adventures are also core components of a
backpacker’s motivations. The desire for authentic cultural engagement does occur outside of
this culture, but is achieved more easily by interacting with or observing local communities,
possible easily within the backpacker culture.

Udaipur as a Backpacking Destination:

Udaipur’s allure is due to, but not limited to its architecture and tranquillity. The city offers
natural bliss, palaces, forts, lakes, gardens, bazaars, art scenes and more. The majestic City
Palace, a sprawling complex overlooking Lake Pichola, dazzles visitors with its intricate
carvings, ornate balconies, and majestic courtyards. Perched atop a hill, the Monsoon Palace
offers panoramic views of the city and its surrounding landscapes. The historic Kumbhalgarh
Fort, located on the outskirts of Udaipur, stands as a testament to Rajputana valour and
ingenuity, with its massive walls stretching over 36 kilometres.

21 | P a g e
The city is home to several renowned temples that reflect its spiritual heritage. The Jagdish
Temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, is adorned with intricate carvings and sculptures. Eklingji
Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiv, is revered for its spiritual significance among devotees.

Offering a rejuvenating escape into the lap of nature. Udaipur’s natural bliss is evident in its
serene lakes, gardens, and picturesque landscapes. The shimmering waters of the lakes create
a tranquil ambiance, perfect for leisurely boat rides and romantic sunsets. Saheliyon ki Bari,
with its lush greenery and intricately designed fountains, is a peaceful retreat from the city’s
hustle and bustle. Additionally, the Aravalli Range surrounding Udaipur provides
breathtaking views and opportunities for hiking and nature walks.

The backpacking community in Udaipur is also attracted to its intriguing street food scene.
Udaipur is famous for its delectable Rajasthani cuisine, with dishes like Dal-Bati and
Churma, Kachoris, and Gatte Ki Sabzi being the highlights. Backpackers can be seen
exploring the narrow streets, hopping from one food stall to another, relishing the flavours
and indulging in the culinary delights the city has to offer. The mouthwatering street food
acts as a bridge between backpackers and the local community, fostering cultural exchange
and creating lasting memories.

Furthermore, backpacking in Udaipur also includes experiencing the renowned festivals and
events that the city hosts. The annual Mewar Festival, Gangaur Festival, and Lake Festival
are celebrated with great pomp and show. Backpackers immerse themselves in the colourful
processions, traditional music, and dance performances, providing them with an authentic
glimpse into the rich Rajasthani culture and traditions.

Despite being a luxury tourism destination, with the presence of all major hotel brands and
many in the pipeline, Udaipur caters to all kinds of demographics. As the frequency of
travellers has increased in the city many budget-friendly accommodations like hostels have
opened. The hostel culture in Udaipur plays a vital role in facilitating the backpacking
community. The city boasts a range of budget-friendly accommodations that cater
specifically to backpackers. These hostels provide a comfortable stay, organize group
activities and excursions, and foster a sense of community among travellers from all around
the world. With their vibrant backpacker communities, these hostels serve as hubs for
socializing, sharing travel stories, and forging lifelong friendships. While luxury hotels offer
unparalleled comfort and amenities, backpacking allows the travellers to opt for budget-
friendly, culturally immersive, and adventurous travel experiences. Balancing budget

22 | P a g e
determines the scope of the trip, level of comfort. It allows travellers to extend their trip
without breaking the bank.

As opposed to other tourism backpacking allows for spontaneous detours, plan their itinerary
according to their interests and preferences without being tied to tour schedules or package
deals. Such flexibility lets travellers interact with the locals easily, fostering an immersive
interaction rather than formalities and procedures.

CONCLUSION

In this research project, we delved into the backpacking culture flourishing within the
captivating city of Udaipur, India, renowned for its rich history, stunning architecture, and
picturesque landscapes. Through a multifaceted approach encompassing interviews, surveys,
and observational studies, we aimed to unravel the intricacies of this dynamic subculture and
understand the consumer behaviour, satisfaction preferences of backpackers exploring
Udaipur.

The findings of our research illuminate a multitude of factors contributing to the allure of
Udaipur among backpackers. First and foremost, the city’s iconic attractions, including the
majestic City Palace, serene Lake Pichola, and intricate Jagdish Temple, serve as magnets
drawing travellers seeking cultural immersion and aesthetic pleasures. Additionally,
Udaipur’s reputation for offering affordable accommodations, ranging from cozy hostels to
quaint guesthouses, resonates strongly with budget-conscious travellers, enabling them to
prolong their stay and delve deeper into the city's myriad offerings.

Furthermore, the diverse culinary scene in Udaipur emerges as a significant draw for
backpackers, providing them with an opportunity to savour authentic Rajasthani cuisine and
indulge in gastronomic adventures at street food stalls and traditional eateries scattered across
the city. The warmth and hospitality of the local populace further enrich the backpacking
experience, fostering meaningful interactions and fostering a sense of belonging among
travellers.

Moreover, Udaipur’s thriving backpacking infrastructure, comprising vibrant backpacker

hostels, bustling markets, and an array of budget-friendly activities, caters to the diverse
needs and interests of the travellers. From guided walking tours through narrow alleyways to
leisurely boat rides on the tranquil waters of Lake Pichola, backpackers are spoilt for choice
when it comes to exploring the city's hidden gems and unravelling its storied past.

However, amidst the allure of Udaipur’s backpacking scene lies a set of challenges that
warrant attention on sustainability, and the preservation of Udaipur’s cultural heritage. As
such, concerted efforts are needed to strike a delicate balance between promoting tourism and
safeguarding the city's natural and cultural assets for future generations to cherish and enjoy.

This research project offers valuable insights into the backpacking culture in India.
Highlighting its allure, challenges, and implications by unravelling the motivations,

58 | P a g e
preferences, and behaviours of backpackers. From the majestic Himalayas to the spiritual
ambiance of Hampi, India's rich tapestry of history, spirituality, and natural beauty captivates
travellers worldwide. However, challenges such as overcrowding, environmental
sustainability, and cultural preservation underscore the need for responsible tourism practices.
By fostering a deeper understanding of backpacking culture in India, we aim to promote
sustainable travel and preserve its treasures for future generations.

By focusing on Udaipur’s backpacking culture, a unique and enriching opportunity to explore

the intersection of travel, culture, and community in one of India’s most iconic destinations
was understood, and fostering a deeper appreciation for culturally rich cities like Udaipur.

59 | P a g e
LIMITATIONS

 Owner’s hesitation to give information about profits, budget and money in general.

 Unavailability of owners for interviews and communication regarding data collection.

 Digital information in marketing of the hostels is not up to date.

 Information about the backpacking culture was very scarce in the region as it is still a
new and emerging trend in the sector of tourism which could cause trouble for a new
traveller searching for information about their trip or travel plans.

 Frequent visitation on location to gather information was a restriction due to packed

college schedule and lack of holidays to plan out proper visitation on location.

RECOMMENDATIONS

While researching backpacking, one keyword that would always come up was, “budget”.
Backpacking is almost synonymous with budget travelling. This is true to an extent, but
backpacking has some undiscovered aspects, such as:

1. Health Benefits: While some research exists on the psychological benefits of outdoor
activities, there may be more to uncover specifically about how backpacking contributes to
mental well-being. This could include studies on the effects of solitude, mindfulness, and
immersion in nature on stress reduction, mood improvement, and overall mental health.

2. Identity Building Exercise: A unique experience that offers solitude, self-reliance, and
personal growth opportunities. Further research could delve into the motivations, challenges,
and outcomes of backpacking trips, as well as the psychological and social factors that
influence individuals’ decisions to backpack alone. Research could explore how individuals'
identities intersect with their backpacking experiences, including issues of representation,
inclusion, belonging, and empowerment within outdoor recreation spaces.

3. Urban Backpacking: Backpacking within or near cities, presents unique challenges and
opportunities compared to wilderness backpacking. Research could investigate urban
backpacking routes, safety considerations, interactions with urban communities, and the
potential for fostering a deeper connection to urban nature and local culture.

4. Backpacking and Technology Disconnect: While technology can enhance safety and
convenience in backpacking, there is growing interest in unplugged or technology-free
backpacking experiences as a means of reconnecting with nature and fostering mindfulness.
Research could investigate the motivations, challenges, and outcomes of technology
disconnect practices in backpacking.

5. Various Types of Backpacking: Food plays a crucial role in backpacking trips, yet there is
limited research on the culinary aspects of backpacking, such as meal planning, food
preparation techniques, and nutritional considerations. Further investigation could explore
innovative backpacking recipes, dietary preferences among backpackers, and the cultural
significance of food. Research could examine the spiritual and philosophical dimensions of
backpacking, including its role in existential exploration, personal growth, and the cultivation
of ecological consciousness.
