A. FOUR ASPECTS OF HOMILETICS

There are four main areas related to homiletics:

1. Concept.
This has to do with obtaining the original theme for the message. It is the art of knowing how
receive a message from God. It refers to the way of obtaining the idea and the initial theme of a sermon.
Frequently, the seed of a thought is planted in the mind and can remain there.
for weeks before it develops to be shared with others.

2. Composition.
After receiving inspiration about a specific truth, you have to start analyzing the
way to discover everything that the truth contains.
When meditating in prayer, carefully write down each thought that comes to your mind.
about that truth.
Do not worry about clarity and order at this stage. It is often necessary to write about
hurry, too much of all the inspiration or thought that is received. It can be clarified later.

3. Construction.
Once you have analyzed all the material on your topic, you must begin to gather thoughts in a
ordered form.
This arrangement will help you in the formation of the sermon as well as in the clear presentation of

4. Communication.
Finally, we arrive at the presentation of the message:

A clear and effective communication of the truth that is presented.

Address the topic in a way that captivates the minds of your listeners.
Follow a line of thought that is easy to understand and follow.
Encourage the audience to take appropriate actions, as we must be 'doers of the
Word and not just listeners." (James 1:22)

B. TWO FALSE IDEAS ABOUT HOMILETICS

There are at least two common mistakes (two extremes) that people tend to make.
regarding 'homiletics'.

Preparation is not necessary.

Based on the idea that preparation is a lack of faith, it is used in some cases the

the preparation!

2. Human ability is sufficient.

The other mistake takes us to another extreme. In this case, all confidence is placed in the preparation.
human ability, with little or no dependence on the Holy Spirit. It is a self-confidence that is
result of training and the development of natural ability. It is the anointing of the Spirit upon

Lesson 2
The Preacher
In the previous lesson, we mentioned that the preaching done...
Tiva is the result of two factors, one Divine and the other human.
Both are necessary, it's like someone said: "without man, God
he does not want, and without God, man cannot.

It is the human aspect that we are primarily concerned with.

specifically in this lesson.
What to preach? It is the frequent question of the preacher.
Who preaches? It's the question often asked by the listeners.

The preacher is always thinking about the subject of his super-

dictation, rather hazardous attendees to the cults pay more attention to
preacher who speaks the truth. The personality of the pastor constitutes his most powerful and eloquent being.
The majority of the sermons preached are forgotten in their entirety within a few hours or days.
but the personality of the preacher is a memory that lasts until the end of life.
In preaching, we communicate Divine truth through human personality.
The personality of the preacher always constitutes the last element in the failure or success of
traffic.

The preacher Eduardo Bounds says: "What the Church needs today is not more machinery.
ecclesiastical, new organizations, new methods, but men to whom the Holy Spirit
can use.

Someone has analyzed how to speak in public effectively (I mean a public speaking different)
to preach) in this way:
- 50% discount
- 20% focus psychology and conclusion
20% of effective communication
10% depersonalization

That 10% final (of personality) leavens the entire discourse. It can constitute the difference between a talk
boring and a fascinating speech.

We will look at the big question: how can the preacher's personality be improved?
there would be hope of eliminating the defects and developing new virtues, it would not be worth studying the matter.

Jesus gives us guidelines in Matthew 5 regarding the ideal man:

Blessed are the ".

Blessed are those who mourn ".
Matthew 5:5 "Blessed are the meek ".
Blessed are those ".
Blessed are the merciful ".
Blessed are the ".
Blessed are the peacemakers ".
Blessed are those ".
Blessed are you ".
Matthew 5:13 "You are ".
Matthew 5:14 "You are ".

Using these biblical norms as ways to measure your personality, allowing that the
Spirit of God be the driving force, it will find success in ministry.
All this is verified with the intimate communion with God.

We will look at some fundamental points of the preacher.

A. SPIRITUAL AND MORAL QUALITIES

A New Birth.
In order to preach and impart God's blessing to others, one must first possess that which
we are talking.

John 3:3 ".

John 3:5 ".

2. A Call.
Since ancient times, men who did great things for God were called by

necessary help.
Not all calls come in the same way, nor are they for the same ministry.

3. Anointing of the Holy Spirit.

The power of the Holy Spirit will provide the necessary anointing for successful persuasion so that the
men receive Christ.

Luke 24:49
".
Acts 1:8
".
Luke 4:18

4. Passion for Souls.

A passion for the souls of men inspired the ministry of Jesus Christ, Paul, and other great

5. Be Yourself.
When facing an audience, keep calm, natural, and relaxed. One of the greatest aids
Important for effective speaking is to be relaxed.
Low tension creates nervousness. Low tension, memory does not function well. The discourse does not flow with
naturalness. Your nervousness will be communicated to the audience and they will also feel tense.
The best way to relax is to entrust your message (prepared) to God. Do the best you can and
leave the results in His hands.
God has chosen each individual just as they are and desires to use them.
It is a big mistake to try to imitate or be what one is not when stepping up to the pulpit.
A similar situation was experienced by the young David when he wanted to wear King Saul's armor. It was not
it would have been a hindrance rather than a help.
If you are trying to imitate someone, your listeners will soon realize it. Decide to be yourself.
and it will be the best I can do, with God's help.

6. Sincerity.
Integrity and honesty are essential for every good preacher. You are a channel for
God, a mouth through which He can speak to humanity. God desires an honest vessel, free
hypocrisy and all deception.
Sincerity means being free from pretensions or deceits. It is being the same person at home, in the

7. Holiness.
If there is sin in the life of the preacher, the congregation will be contaminated.
If there is bitterness in your spirit, it will contaminate the listeners.
If you like to criticize, that trait will come to light in your preaching and gossip will abound.
If you allow yourself to be controlled by negative attitudes, the congregation will react in the same way.

before God and before men.

Isaiah 52:11

1 Timothy 3:2-3,9

".

What the preacher is speaks louder than what he says.

8. Sentence.
The practical secret of success in the life of the preacher consists of keeping his chamber of
prayer, your upper room, your place and time of intimacy with God.
This place of devotion can be a place in the countryside, a corner in the house... and as a last resort,
the church itself can serve as the sanctuary of the pastor.
The historians show that the great, powerful, and noble saints of the past centuries were all
individuals who knew God in intimacy.

[Link] QUALITIES
These qualities are not absolutely necessary, but they will help in the presentation of the Gospel.
GoodHealth.
Good health and its care are essential in the arduous task of ministry.

Good Mind.
The power of thinking is essential in the delivery of a sermon.
b. Imagination, help with analysis and grouping of ideas.
c. The use of illustrations reveals deep truths in a simple way.

3. Good Voice.
The voice is a natural gift of a preacher. You must take care of it. Always try to be aware of it.
We will improve it when necessary. A poor voice can be cultivated until it becomes more pleasant.
for the listeners.
No monotone, don't shout, don't repeat. Use good volume, clarity, be natural (not forced).

C. QUALITIES OF EDUCATION
Secular Education.
A good education and acquisition of scientific, historical, and linguistic illustrations are essential

A minister should read good books and current journalistic material. Stay informed about the
world events.
The vocabulary of the preacher consists of a number of words that he knows and with which

The development can be through questions.

Concordance, marginal references, and studies of Greek or Hebrew words can be used.

Lesson 4
Parts of a Sermon
A sermon is a religious discourse based on the Holy Scriptures, presented to an audience.
ministry for the conversion of the unconverted and for the edification of believers.

The following parts make up a good organized Sermon:

A. The Theme
B. TheText
C. The Introduction
D. The Development (The Body)
E. The Conclusion
F. The Application

[Link]

The theme is the essence of the sermon, presented in a word or a phrase. The theme can become first.
or the text can also be for a sermon. The important thing is that both the theme and the text go together.
the hand (enharmony).

In the topical sermon, the theme is given by the preacher.

In the textual or expository sermon, the theme is found in the text.

3. In a historical, biographical narrative sermon, the preacher takes from the main part of the
history, and each point of his sermon must focus on the chosen theme.

The preacher should focus on a single theme in each sermon.

All the propositions of the sermon (argument, proof, testimony, illustration, etc.) must be
to be related to the same topic.

One must choose:

A topic I know well.

A topic that the listeners will be able to understand.
A topic that leads to an undefined ending.
An appropriate topic for the moment.
An ideal theme for the time.
A suitable topic for the listeners.
An ideal topic for the place.

The issues to be addressed in order to find a solution, considering the needs of the listeners, considering their
own limitations and their dependence on the Holy Spirit.
24

The preacher must have social growth, learn to observe the needs, interests and the
problems of the people in the community where it is, to hit the topic that God has for
them and present it in the language they understand.

The main theme is Christ (Savior, Sanctifier, Healer, Shepherd, etc.)

Acts 8:35
".
Acts 17:23
".

The end of the message is to see the saved souls, sanctified and growing in the grace of God.

It is better to choose a topic that is just starting to be studied. You should think about the topic.
for a good time with prayer and study (reading, meditating, studying), until one is saturated with them

By choosing a text, one can find out the theme suggested by that text.
You can be general, for example: "The Prayer", or more specific: "Praying with Faith", "Developing

The text is the passage from the Holy Scriptures that is used as the foundation of the sermon.

it is used as the text. The text returned to receive its correct place in the time of Martin Luther and during
the reform.
Since the time of John Wesley, shorter texts have been the favorites.
25

The Importance of the Text.

The text is the basis of the sermon. Without a biblical text, we have no sermon. The Holy Scriptures are the
authority of the sermon.
The text must remain in harmony with the theme of the sermon.
All the opinions of men outside of the Bible are of short duration. However, it is the
Word of God, which remains forever and is the one that produces eternal results.

Isaiah 40:7-8
".
Isaiah 55:11
".

2. The Main Text.

In contextual, expository, historical, and narrative discourse, the preacher begins with the context he has chosen.
The thematic and biographical link does not need to use a main text, the preacher chooses their
first theme or character

3. BackupTexts.
In all sermons, the preacher seeks texts to support, to back up their arguments and
to illustrate their points.
Generally, in an expository, historical, biographical, or narrative sermon, there are fewer Biblical texts.
that are used as support, in a thematic or textual sermon.

connected with the following message.
The introduction is in a sermon what the takeoff is in aviation, just as the
application of the sermon, it is the landing of the plane. Both are the most critical moments of the passenger
a
airplane, as well as for the listener of a sermon.

Sources to find an introduction:

a. In the text itself.

in the context.
c. A reference to Jewish traditions or customs.
d. An explanation of Biblical geography.
A journalism question (Why?, Who?, How?, When?, Where?, What?).
f. An unexpected declaration.
a story, testimony.
h. Reference to current events.
An explanation of why I will talk about this topic.
j. Summary of previous messages, if preaching a series of sermons.
26

2. Practical tips for the introduction:

a. Be brief, if it is too long it will lose the interest of the rest of the sermon.
b. Do not put the entire sermon in the introduction.
c. Be simple, an idea that captures the listener's attention and that they understand.
The introduction can arise before, during, or after the preparation of the sermon.

D. THE DEVELOPMENT (The Body)

In the development of the sermon, we deal with the explanation, exposition, interpretation of the topic.

Divisions of the Sermon.

Each division must be related to the topic. Three, four, or possibly more divisions.
For beginners, it's better to have fewer divisions. There can be subdivisions.

The purpose of divisions is:

a. Maintain an orderly progress of thought (sermon).

b. Avoid repetitions of ideas, or avoid the lack of them.
c. Memorize (in part) the main points.

2. Methods to determine the Divisions

a. The method of Logic:

Each division is a proposition. These propositions are the ideas, the important points in
the text (textual sermon, expository)
There must be a progression of thought:

i. From the least important to the most important.

ii. From lesser impact to greater impact.
iii. From general truth to specific truth.
iv. From the known to the unknown.
v. The explanation before the application.
vi. Teaching before the exhortation.
From the false to the true.
[Link] the negative to the positive.

b. The Rhetorical Method:

Donkey studio of words and phrases. Here is an understanding of the grammatical rules that are important.

c. The interrogative method:

The sermon is developed based on questions: Why?, Who?, How?, When?,
Where?, What?, etc.

d. The natural chronological method:

It is the method for the biographical, historical, or narrative sermon.
This method can be used in two ways: First, after reading the text, it is done a
review and division of the story, pointing out the spiritual lessons, adding
observations. The second option is, after presenting a fact, an event, or a
lesson from the person or story is applied to our lives. Then, a
second fact, followed by the application. Three, four or more points can thus be presented,
but they all must support the main theme of the sermon.
27

[Link]
This is the time to briefly reiterate the main theme of the sermon. Be brief. No
introduce a new verse in the conclusion, nor start another sermon.

How to conclude:

A short summary of the main points can be made.

2. The main text can be repeated.

3. Repeat the main exhortations of the sermon.

4. One can conclude with an appropriate story (illustration).

5. With a song.

6. With an probing question, etc.

7. A combination of these can be used.

F. THE APPLICATION

This is the climax of the message.

Here we allow the listener to respond and apply the shared truth to their life.
This is the most critical moment of the sermon, the enemy will seek to interfere in this part, (with
crying children, bathroom, sound, movements, cough, etc.) so that everyone has good hearing only and they are not
makers of the spoken Word.

Remember: The introduction in a sermon is like the takeoff of an airplane in aviation, so

just as the application of the sermon is the landing of the plane. Both are the most critical moments of
passenger on a flight, as well as for the listener of a sermon. Do not overlook the moment of
apply the preached Word of God for an abundant and eternal life of the listener.

All the events of our daily life can give us material for our sermons.
Jesus Christ used everyday things: the shepherd, the sower, the king, the boss,
employee, the coin, the fig tree, etc. to illustrate and draw topics for preaching.
Above all things love, read, study, meditate, very well the manual of manuals, your Bible and so on.
He will never run out of ideas and topics to preach about.
Lesson 5
Preparation of the Sermon

The pastor steps down from the pulpit, having finished his sermon with a...
satisfaction, but their immediate concern, what takes away their
peace and take away his dream is, what should I preach next Sunday?
This situation of constant concern can be remedied,
if a systematic method is adapted for the preparation

Over the course of days, weeks, months, and even years, the notebook accumulates many
texts, all in the process of development, until they mature for use from the pulpit.
The new texts and themes can arise from a thousand sources: the Bible reading of the day, a phrase from a

sermons.

In the study of a text, there are two levels of meaning and application to life:

Firstly, we find the clearly evident things on the surface of any text,
what every reader discovers. Here, with little effort, one assembles the sermon and its result is also minimal.

2. At the second level, the believer quickly reads a passage while the pastor searches.

extension, and the grass is good, but the shepherd knows that the greatest riches are in the roots,
beneath the surface. One must reach the deepest treasures and in them, the shepherd himself must

B. EXPANDING THE OUTLINE (body):

Have only one theme in each sermon.

2. Use illustrations. They help listeners better understand the topic being discussed.
illustrations are like windows in a house, letting in light, to see. The illustration-

4. Have the care not to condemn, always offering divine hope. For the problems of the
daily life, there is a solution, and the sermon can be offered.

Jesus Christ must be the center of our sermon.

6. Use appropriate words. Do not use vulgar words, use a good vocabulary, do not use
words that are unfamiliar to the listeners.

Preaching of the Sermon

Homiletics is not a conduit or receiver to receive the

divine message. It's more of a process, a tool, a me-
God, or the way to convey the divine message to beings

Half is the preaching, the delivery of the prepared sermon.

A. DEFINITION OF PREDICATION

to the man.

José M. Martínez:
It is the communication in the form of oral discourse of the divine message deposited in the Sacred
Writing, with the power of the Holy Spirit and through a suitable person, in order to meet the needs

B. DEPRECIATION METHODS

Memorize the sermon.

This method is not very popular among preachers, as most of us do not enjoy a
excellent memory. The audience also does not welcome the recitation of a sermon very well. Without

memory. They do not memorize word for word, but the main points.
32

2. Reading the sermon.

This method offers several advantages and other disadvantages.
However, the preacher can speak with all the well-crafted words, without ceasing to
mention nothing of what was written (scheduled).

The disadvantages are several:

The preacher becomes very mechanical.

b. You must learn to read very well and quickly. You can get the line wrong and make mistakes like that.
There is very little eye contact with the congregation, losing the interest of the listeners.

This style can be used very well in radio programs. The radio preacher needs to know what
What does it say and how long will it take to say it.

3. Extemporaneously.
This method is very natural. This is the favorite style of preachers and listeners.
two classes of extemporaneous preachers:

a. Those who do not use notes. The preacher has nothing in sight to recall the thoughts.
It deserves attention, but it has been well prepared in the material. There is evidence that what it says is known.
Where do you want to take the congregation.
b. The one who preaches extemporaneously with notes. The preacher has in front of him a sketch that
I am going to assist during your presentation. Every preacher should develop the habit of taking notes.
although it does not depend on them. The sketch can be simple or more complete. The notes are written.
They will help you keep the sermon for a future opportunity. It is not so difficult to remember that the

4. Improvised.
This is the preaching that is born in the moment. There is no adequate preparation beforehand.
There are moments when a preacher taken by surprise may say that you cannot come up to the surface.
repeating a sermon that has been preached recently. This method is very suitable for repetition,
feelings of the moment and in general is a superficial preaching.

C. WAYS TO PREDICATE

The Voice.
In preaching, it is necessary to apply the principles of communication.

a. ClearVoice.
The task of a good preacher is for the listeners to understand him. Consult with your spouse or with
a friend, if understood correctly. Use variety in the voice:

In speed, fast and slow.

In the volume, loud voice and quiet voice.
In pitch, high and low, non-monotone.
In intensity, the word of God is alive. Avoid shouting.
33

b. Convincing Voice.
The Bible is our conduct, and our credential. Let us not preach to others what does not apply.
show our own lives. In his preaching, he speaks directly, so that each individual feels that it is about them.
talking to him, even if there is a crowd.
Do not use phrases like 'ahhh, ahhh, ahhh' between your ideas, nor 'um, um', or other phrases that
we have developed negative habits.
c. Natural Voice.
Speak as if you were talking to a friend, in a relaxed manner. Express the ideas in a way that reflects that.
Let everyone hear and understand. Be humble and confident. Be enthusiastic and you will see joy.
where there is sadness, there is power where there is weakness and where there is disbelief.
noBe yourself,
try to imitate someone.

When you have said what you need to say, finish. Preach as best as you can but finish before...
the listeners get tired.

2. The Posture.
Practice body balance while preaching, behind the pulpit and on the platform. Do not
Support the codes in the pulpit. Don't separate yourself like a statue. Don't move all the time either.
It will tire the congregation. Do not run on the platform.
Do not preach with your eyes closed, looking above the congregation or focused on the ceiling.
Observe your listeners. Remember that the eyes are the window to the soul.

The Dress.
The way of dressing should be according to the occasion. Always clean, groomed, and well
[Link] together.
Dress comfortably, and forget about your clothing. Do not play with the buttons of the jacket or
with the coins in the pocket. Do not adjust your clothing while on the pulpit.

4. The Anointing.
On each occasion, when preaching the divine truths, we must seek a touch in prayer.
Heavenly. Without the anointing, much of the work done is of little result.

There are four hindrances to the anointing:

a. Sin in our life: pride, anger, rage, selfishness, etc.

b. The lack of preparation and prayer.
c. Trust in our natural ability.
d. Send a wrong message.

Avoid spiritual mediocrity in any area. We are ministering for God, therefore
we will say, we will do, and we will give our best.

Observe and learn from the physical and spiritual characteristics of a good preacher and strive to embody them.
to cultivate them in their own life and in the presentation of their message.
34

[Link] TO THE PREACHING

There are those elements that are vital for the positive development of a meeting. We finish this
homiletics manual, providing some practical suggestions for the proper development of worship.
The worship must begin at the appointed time. The believers will be punctual knowing that the services
they start when it is announced.

2. Make sure to have the room well-ventilated and that it has good light.

3. That the room is clean and the seats are in good condition.

4. That the bathrooms are presentable, with paper, soap, and towels.

5. Demonstrability, especially with new people or visitors. That each resident...

may be helpful in giving a warm welcome to the newcomers.

Make sure the children are well taken care of.

Musicians should rehearse in advance, giving time to pray together before ministering.

The sound must be ready 15 minutes before the service begins.

9. Praise and worship is the designated time (by the pastor) for the musicians to us
take him to the most holy place.

Psalm 22:3
".
b. Psalms 95:2
".
c. Psalms 100:1-2

".
10. Do not be lengthy with the notices, nor with the offering. This can be done between the praise and the
worship, to allow a few moments of praise before the preacher ministers the
word of God.
11. When praying in public, do not preach a sermon. Also, do not give indirect remarks.

12. Read the Bible passage (2-3 times) wait a moment while the congregation finds it.
Speak clearly and with clarity, articulating the words well and respecting punctuation.

Mateo Simpson, in his 'Discourses on Preaching', speaking about the preacher, said:
"His throne is the pulpit;"
it stands in the place of Christ;
your message is the Word of God;
There are immortal souls all around.
El Salvador, invisible, is trapped;
the Holy Spirit moves over the congregation;
angels observe the scene,
and heaven and hell await the outcome.

How great a responsibility the Preacher has. God bless you!!!
