School, home, and community

Lack of commitment from parents

Paula Pérez Valenzuela

June 5, 2012
INTRODUCTION

Education in Chile has always had a large number of shortcomings.

that prevent reaching an ideal model of learning and teaching through
these years. The reasons that infect the educational system are several, those that
they generally originate from three key points, such as school, home and
community.

While there are several factors that we can name and classify in this
work, we recognize that the main culprit we point out in this circle
vicious, is the one we detect as the origin of this dynamic, the home. It is because
thus, the saying 'education begins at home' gains strength when one
start to focus on the root of this social evil.
DEVELOPMENT

Lack of commitment

One of the first things we recognize is the lack of commitment and of

responsibility of the adults on duty, who prioritize doing other tasks
activities before educating their children. It is they who give, in their
majority, a blank canvas for the teachers, so that they nurture and cultivate not only
learning contents in their sprouts, but also values.

A regrettable fact in an increasingly individualistic society, that

worry about personal growth and not collective growth. The latter focuses on
in the increase of the relationship that is forged within the family nucleus, first
place where every human being learns in their early years of life.

Today it is known that the information we receive from our environment is

constituted 15% by verbal language and 85% by non-verbal language
verbal. The child learns more from what he sees than from what he hears, in this way
we observe that the behavior patterns of parents tend to
repeating in the children: If the children curse, it is because the parents curse, if the children
they complain, it's that the parents complain, if the children don't listen it's that the parents

they do not listen, if the children do not respect, it is because the parents do not respect1”.

It is a reality that hinders the performance and effort of teachers, yes

that a student who does not have their parents' motivation to study prefers
to desert or simply to fulfill school obligations without giving time to
the understanding of the content. Carries out the tasks without paying attention to what

I could learn from them.

That is why parental support is vital for a child to study.

learning content without feeling a pressure that leads them to a
painless experience, but boring.

No one teaches parents how to be one, many have a role model to follow,
they want to copy what their people did because according to them they got a good
result, or simply focus on not repeating the mistakes of their parents
that I do not give them affection or values.

The absence of the father is about that type of emotional exchange

father - son, which involves real or functional events of detachment, disinterest,
neglect, disdain, irresponsibility, and lack of commitment; understand
even all real acts of open violence, animosity, and hatred expressed by
verbal, preverbal, or physical manner, by the father.2”

Role of the parents

Fernando Osorio, an Argentine psychoanalyst, recognizes three types of parents:

Parents who ask, who are those that want to know, seek to know;
parents who sue, who are those who want to know nothing and only seek

that, in general, they will not ask anything regarding a possible lack of
to know, but rather they ask the other to solve it for them –in the case of organizations
school activities that the teacher does-.3

It also highlights other types such as the colleague dad, who prefers to cultivate.
a friendly relationship with his son; the postmodern one who supports in every process to his

son, and the one that repeats countless times the tyrannical father, who is shown with
a self-sufficient attitude, knowing and being able to do everything, undervaluing the actions of

his son who does not resemble the ideals conceived by him.

These models that Osorio talks about describe the main roles or
models of parents that usually exist in society. Some exaggerated to me

loving, while others prefer to be demanding so that they bear fruit that
they seek to obtain.

Practically any emotional exchange between parents and children is a

trigger of unconscious fantasies. Only the fantasies that survive
they are fed, reiterated, stimulated by repeated actions over and over again
from the parents.4

Possible solution

One of the ideas to combat this reality that threatens the

students, it is to raise awareness among parents about the role they play in the life of
his children, demonstrating the benefits that students would have from being stimulated
from their homes, explaining that school is a place where one can
find answers to your questions and learn entertaining things that you don't know.

The solution I found for this type of problem was to sign a letter.
of commitment to the representatives. A kind of written contract that stipulates
the commandments that must be fulfilled for your child to have a development
beneficial and related to a work of cooperation between home,
community and school.

The secret resource would be the integration of the family into their education.
son, actively, transforming tasks into a collective activity, where
all household members participate and cooperate in the realization of what the
school requests. Describing what contribution each of them made, grandmother, grandfather,
mother, father, brother, sister, among others.

Idea 3
Parent participation in school life seems to have
repercussions such as:
Higher self-esteem for boys and girls.
A better school performance.
Better relationships between parents and children.
More positive attitudes of parents towards the school.5

It is due to these results that the National Association of Education

(National Education Association) of the United States recommends to follow
next task list.

● Talk about the books and stories you read to your son.
● Help your child organize their time.
● Set a limit on the amount of television hours they can watch during
the days of the week.
● Talk to your child regularly about what is happening at school.
● Review the homework every night.6

in the education of children
CONCLUSION

The lack of commitment from parents is directly reflected in the

school and social performance of their children, if they receive motivation and the
love from a young age will yield better results than those who have a few.
parents who do not worry about promoting their children's learning.

It is difficult to see that children who grow up in a violent, distant environment,

surrounded by people who do not exceed the third year of high school, manage to focus on

overcome that barrier of schooling. It is enough to walk through the hills of Valparaíso,
to recognize that there are many children dropping out of their studies, who do not have
a father or mother who encourages him to finish at least the education
basic.

The municipal establishments try to work with the parents so that

this doesn't happen, but it is inevitable if you manage to observe the place that surrounds a

student who prefers to stay away from school to work. It is a path full of
stones and obstacles that show these children the other way, the easy one where the
money is earned in the same way.

If free and quality education is necessary, it is even more so the

commitment of collaboration between parents and teachers.
