DIY Steam Boat from Recycled Materials

This document describes how to build a homemade steam boat using recycled materials such as a milk carton, cans, and straws. The steam generated inside a closed can causes the boat to move when the steam escapes, demonstrating Newton's third law of action and reaction. The process involves cutting and shaping the milk carton, inserting straws into the can to form a steam engine, and sealing everything with silicone before testing the boat in water.

Homemade Steam Boat

The present project was motivated by the initiative of a recycling project,

what consists of the use of elements, that after their use are
discarded in the trash or even in the environment. This project aims to
another alternative, instead of discarding all these materials, to have available
these to create something interesting and curious, thus applying the example
of reuse.

Objective
Demonstrate that with purely recyclable materials, things can be created.
wonderful and able to help care for and improve our environment.
Sketch and design a steam boat, reutilizing recycled materials and
using the 3rd Law of Newton (principle of action - reaction) for its movement

Statement of the Problem:

Is it possible for an object to have movement with some simple straws? How?
Is it possible for this object to start moving?

Hypothesis:
When the water begins to heat up, it enters a gaseous state and
turns into steam, this steam makes the object, in this case the boat,
start to move.

Materials:
Large empty milk carton
Small sail
Empty beer or soda can
Three sorbets with elbow
A piece of wire
Bar silicone
Glue
Silicone gun
Needle-nose pliers
Rule
Marker
Ballpoint pen
Scissors
Paint or tempera

Preparation:
1. Open the box, cut the top and bottom, and shape it like a boat.
2. Then, 5cm from the tip of the bow, make a small hole through which
They have to take out the sorbets that will be part of the engine.

A can will be used to cut a centered strip 5 cm wide,

then the side edges are sanded so that the adhesive can be applied there,
then half of the strip is folded and on both sides half is folded
centimeter, but the fold should not be too tight.
It opens at one corner, and with 2 pieces of a straw they are inserted into it.
hollowed out to the bottom of the can, and thus the piece of can remains hollowed.

5. Now grab the remaining straws, and bend them at approximately 45°.
and the corners are inserted into the hole, the hole is completely covered
with silicone and also covers the elbows of the straws, so that the
a 45° angle should remain firm and straight.

6. With the remaining part of the box, draw the ship's framework and cut it out.
7. Use a piece of any leftover straw and place it underneath.
from the boat.

8. A wire 10 cm long should be taken and threaded through at about 7 cm.

from the bottom of the ship, and the tips are bent to keep it steady.
9. Then, the framework is glued to the boat with silicone to ensure it fits well.

sorbet.
11. Then, the holes of the straws have to be covered and the boat must be taken like this.
to immerse it in water and then the candle is placed. You have to wait for
heat the can so that the boat moves forward.
12. Finally, it is painted in the desired color. (Test the operation)
of the boat first before painting)

Scientific Demonstration

It is given by Newton's reaction since when the system is closed it generates

vapor and the pressure inside the can makes the vapor escape violently
generating movement.

Conclusion:
We have been able to design and make a steam boat work with the use of the
thermal energy, using the 3rd law of Newton and recycling materials that in
the house can be discarded, thus concluding the creation of a project
attractive, eye-catching, fascinating, interesting, and curious in addition to being easy to perform.
In addition to verifying that our initially posed hypothesis was correct,
this thanks to the development of the project.
