CHAPTER I: INTRODUCTION
1.1. Introduction
With the constant increase in demand for more efficient services and a greater concern for
quality of service, increasingly the use of technology has been applied in various
areas demanding greater efforts from the professional who lives with such reality. This work
intends to contribute to the technological advancement of the Zambeze University by presenting a
Web information system to improve the management process of graduate students.
Information Systems (IS) are a set of interdependent elements (subsystems),
logically associated, so that, from their interaction, necessary information is generated for the
decision making.
According to Rascão (2004), Information System is an organized set of procedures,
that, when executed, produce information to support decision-making and control
of organizations.
Information systems come to benefit organizations, users, and anyone
individual or group that interacts with the system. Among the benefits that a system of
information should include: data security, better service, fewer errors, greater
precision, greater efficiency, and greater productivity.
This project aims to develop a system for managing graduate students.
Zambeze University (Alumni of Zambeze University), where monitoring is carried out
near the professional trajectory of its graduates, to better monitor the results of their
training and better adjust the profile of the training offer and the evolution of needs of
job market. A project that aims to create a network with students who are already
they completed some undergraduate and/or graduate course (Bachelor's and/or master's) in this
University.
The objective, however, is to: maintain contact with the graduated students and to know how
they are professional.

4
1.2. Justification
Lack of the use of technologies specifically for database and a system for the students
graduates can register and store data.
Difficulty in the statistical collection of information, such as how many
students of a certain course have jobs, which courses have the most students
unemployed.
With the use of programming, it is possible to provide a management system for students, which will facilitate in

efficient and quick registration of students, and it will also facilitate access to information when
the institution wants to conduct a statistical survey of the students in a certain month, year,
You will still be able to check in the system how many students found jobs and how long it took.
took after his graduation.
For the above-mentioned reasons, the development of a prototype aimed at
present solutions to keep in touch with graduated students and learn how they are doing
are professionally.

1.3. Delimitation of the theme

This system will track the professional trajectory of graduates.
Zambeze University, to better monitor the results of your training and to be better able
adjust the profile of the educational offer and the evolution of the labor market needs since
From 2014 to today, it will have the Faculty of Sciences and Technologies (FCT) as its pilot.

1.4. Problem
Lack of management and monitoring of students graduated from Zambeze University.
The complexity of the issues surrounding the management of students who have graduated within a
university leads to questioning what the most suitable means are for this management
the graduates should be functional and able to meet the objectives they set out to achieve.
Over the years, the world of technology has been increasing more and more, in the case of
Universities, and particularly Zambeze University, hold numerous data on
students.
For this purpose, the use of a management system for graduate students from Unizambeze comes
respond to the demands of these problems, thus facilitating the institution. With this system, the
the institution will register the data in a database and the system will also allow you to delete it,
and update the data.
What is the importance of using a database system in student management?
graduates from Zambeze University?

1.5. Hypothesis

1.7. LITERATURE REVIEW
1.7.1. Alumni
An alumni is a former student and, most of the time, is a graduate of an educational institution.
(school, college, university). According to the Department of Education of the States
In the United States, the term alumni is used in conjunction with women's colleges or colleges.

masculine, a male group of students or a mixed group of students:

According to John Boswell, the word "is not defined anywhere in relation to
status, privilege or obligation". Citing the research of John Boswell, who studied the many
registrations about former students, Boswell concluded that it referred to exposed children who were

taken to a house where they were 'considered as a means between an heir and a slave,
participating in different ways from both categories." Despite the heat of feelings
between the father and the child, "a student can be treated as a beloved son and as a servant
domestic.

1.7.2. Information System

It is a set formed by people, software, hardware, procedures, and data. The system of
information is responsible for disseminating information throughout the organization (O’ Brien, 2000).
According to Araújo (1999), an Information System (IS) must be flexible, easy to use,
responsive, communicative, and profitable.
Stair and Reynolds (2002) consider that a decision support system guides, assists, and makes
so that the administrator can acquire more concrete knowledge to make decisions.
The Support Systems are computerized systems that have three components that interact.
between each other: a language system (communication mechanism between the various components),
a knowledge system (data repository) and a processing system
problems (connection between the other two components with the particularity of this one having
special abilities required for decision-making. Conceptually, we can define
Decision Support Systems or Decision Support Systems as responsible applications
for the capture and elaboration of information within a database that is relevant
in the decision-making process. Through a good database system, it is possible
transform a large database into a competitive advantage by developing a system that
act in the sense of grouping information that demonstrates changes in patterns. The system of
decision support assists management in decision-making through tools and data in
a single application enabling the analysis of important data from the organization.

7
Characteristics of an Information System
Dealing with large amounts of data from different sources;
Provide flexibility in reporting and presentation;
Provide graphic and text guidance;
Support drill down analysis 7;
Carry out complex and sophisticated analyses;
Make comparisons using suitable software packages;
Perform sensitivity analysis, simulations and "hit the target".

1.8. Security in information systems

Information Security is related to the protection of a set of data, in the sense
to preserve the value they have for an individual or an organization. They are characteristics
basics of information security the attributes of confidentiality, integrity and
availability, this security not being restricted only to computational systems,
electronic information or storage systems. The concept applies to all
aspects of information and data protection. The concept of Information Security or
Computer Security is closely related to Information Security,
including not only the security of data/information but also that of the systems themselves.
Currently, the concept of Information Security is standardized by the ISO/IEC standard.
17799:2005, influenced by the English standard (British Standard) BS 7799. The series of standards
ISO/IEC 27000 has been reserved to address Information Security standards, including
the completion to the original work of the English standard. ISO/IEC 27002:2005 continues
being formally considered as 17799:2005 for historical purposes.
Information Security refers to the protection in place for the information of a
a certain company or person, that is, it applies to both corporate information and to
personal. Information is understood as a set of compiled and organized data that has
value for some organization or person. It can be kept for exclusive use or
exposed to the public.
Metrics can be established to define the existing level of security, and with this,
the foundations will be established for the analysis of the improvement or worsening of the security situation

existing. The security of a specific piece of information can be affected by factors

behavioral and usage by those who use it, through the environment or infrastructure that surrounds it

8
or by malicious individuals who have the objective of stealing, destroying, or modifying such
information (FERREIRA, 2013).

1.8.1. Web Technology

The World Wide Web, WWW, or simply Web, was developed to be 'a pool of
human knowledge, that would allow collaborators in distant locations to share ideas and
all aspects of a common project1. She should allow documents
developed separately could be easily linked and viewed in the same
environment without this requiring major changes nor that possible changes needed
to be done in a centralized manner.

1.8.2. Web technology as a platform for disseminating information

Web technology works using the client-server paradigm. In this model of
In computing, processing is divided, as the name suggests, between clients and servers.
Clients request services, which are executed by servers. On the web, clients are
generic software, called browsers, that provide the user interface.
Browsers understand web technology standards and are responsible for transforming the
user requests in requests to web services. The latter retrieve the resources
(pages) requested and returned to the clients, who interpret, format, and make them available
to the users. To retrieve a page, users type its address (URL) and the
the browser forwards the request to the web server. Therefore, to access a page, it is only
I need to know your address. Additionally, the pages can be linked together, allowing
that the user "navigates" through various pages. Each page may contain resources, such as
like buttons, figures or texts, which allow that, when activated, a new page
be requested. The browser is responsible for converting the activation of a resource into a
page request. Although each web page can link to any other,
commonly pages are grouped into sets that represent correlated information and
are stored on the same web server. Such sets of pages are called
Web sites. Another feature of web technology is that the communication between the browser and the
web server was designed to operate without maintaining connections, that is, after the
return of a page, the web server does not store information about who requested it or what
The page was returned. Therefore, each request to the server is independent of the others.

1.8.3. Web technology as a platform for access to information systems
Over time, new features have been added to web technology. With them, it became
if possible:
Send information to the server along with a request;
Save 'state' between two server calls;
Perform simple processing in the browser itself;
Redirect a request so that it can be processed in an application on the server.
enabling the dynamic assembly of web pages; and,
Make secure communications between clients (browsers) and servers.

Methodologies
The research strategy, according to Yin (2005), defines how the data will be collected.
and analyzed. However, the author warns that each type of research has advantages and
disadvantages, in this way, for this study some research strategies were evaluated
in order to identify which would be the most suitable.
The process of choosing the research strategy considered the following alternatives:
experiments, surveys, file analysis, historical research, and case studies.
According to Yin (2005), these are the five main research strategies in the sciences.
social and each of them, according to the author, is related to the following conditions: to the type of
question that guides the research, to the extent of control that the researcher has over events
behavioral and the degree of focus on contemporary events as opposed to
historical events.
The identification of the problem proposed for study was made through an Inductive method, where,
according to DIEHL (2006), it is a method proposed by Bacon, Hobbes, Locke, and Hume that

considers that knowledge is based on facts to achieve the objectives of

work or observation of cases in concrete reality.
For the development of the work, bibliographic research was used, seeking authors.
within the areas of Quality and Software Engineering, so that it would be possible for the
theoretical foundations of the topic addressed.

According to Rubin and Rubin (1995), the researcher, when conducting qualitative research
needs to pay attention to the symbols and metaphors used by the interviewee. Therefore, it is possible
to infer that the great challenge when opting for this method lies in interpreting it adequately

10
to the words of the interviewee and to clarify the meaning of their words. Furthermore, according to
the concepts of Vergara (2000) this study has an explanatory nature, since it aims
clarify what factors contribute to the implementation of the System for
management of graduate students at Zambeze University proceeds successfully.
The development methodology is an activity that deals with what the system has
to do, noting that the technique used in this project was the Unified Modeling Language
2(UML), which is a technique applied to object-oriented systems. In recent years, UML

became established as the standard modeling language adopted by software engineering.

The aspects of this modeling were defined in point 1.7. The model was also used.
