ASME Pipeline Codes Overview
ASME Pipeline Codes Overview
For pipes for industrial and naval plants. This code establishes the minimum requirements for
the design, materials, manufacturing, assembly, testing, and inspection of power and auxiliary services
from the piping systems for power generation stations to the facilities
institutional, central, and district heating plants.
The external piping code of the boiler for power and high boilers
temperature, high-pressure water boilers in which steam is generated at a pressure of more than
15 PSIG and the high-pressure water temperature is generated above 160 PSI, and/or the
temperatures above 250 degrees F.
B31.2 - 1968 - pipe combustible
This has been removed as a national standard and is replaced by ANSI / NFPA Z223.1, but
B31.2 is still available from ASME and is a good reference for the design of systems.
gas pipes (from the meter to the appliance).
B31.3 - 2002 - Process Pipelines
Design of chemical and petroleum plants and the refineries for processing chemical products and
hydrocarbons, water, and steam. This Code contains regulations for the pipes found
typically in oil, chemical, pharmaceutical, textile, paper, semiconductor refineries
and cryogenic plants, and related to processing plants and terminals.
This Code establishes requirements for materials and components, design, manufacturing, assembly,
installation, examination, inspection, and testing of pipes. This Code applies to the piping for
all liquids, including: (1) intermediate raw materials, chemicals and finishing products, (2) the
petroleum products, (3) gas, vapor, air and water, (4) fluidized solids; (5) refrigerants, and (6)
cryogenic liquids. It also includes the piping that interconnects the pieces or phases within
a setup of the packaged equipment.
B31.4 - 2002 - Pipeline systems for the transportation of liquid hydrocarbons and other liquids
This Code establishes the requirements for design, materials, construction, assembly, inspection
and tests of the pipes, transport of liquids such as crude oil, condensate, gasoline
natural
anhydrous liquid and liquid petroleum products for leasing facilities 'producers, farms
of tanks, natural gas processing plants, refineries, stations, the plants of
ammonia, terminals (marine, railway, and truck) and the provision of other points of
reception.
The pipes consist of pipe, flanges, bolts, joints, valves, and relief elements, the
accessories and the pressure contained in parts of other pipe components. It also includes
hooks and supports, equipment and other elements necessary to prevent overload of the
pressure that contains parts. Does not include the support structures such as the frames of the
buildings, buildings or bar foundations
Requirements for offshore pipes are found in chapter IX. They are also included.
Within the scope of application of this Code are:

but it does include all the connection refrigerant and the secondary cooling pipes from
from the first joint adjacent to these devices.
B31.8 - 2003 - Transmission and Distribution of Gas Pipeline Systems
This Code applies to the design, manufacture, installation, inspection, and testing of the facilities.
of pipelines for the transportation of gas. This code also covers safety aspects of the
operation and maintenance of those facilities.
B31.8S-2001 - 2002 - Gas Pipeline Integrity Management System
This standard applies to on-shore piping systems made of ferrous materials and that
gas transport.
piping system: all parts of the physical installations through which it is transported the
gas, including pipes, valves, fittings attached to the pipe, compressors, stations of
measurement, regulating stations, delivery stations, and manufacturers of sets of
headlines.
The principles and procedures contained in integrity management are applicable to all
piping systems. This standard is specifically designed to assist the operator (such as
is defined in section 13) with the necessary information to develop and implement a
integrity program effective management using proven industry practices and the
processes.
The processes and approaches in this standard are applicable to the entire pipeline.
B31.9 - 1996 - Piping Service Building
This section of the code has rules for piping in industrial and institutional applications.
commercial and public buildings and multi-unit residences, which do not require the range of sizes,
pressures, temperatures and coverage in B31.1.
This Code establishes the requirements for design, materials, manufacturing, installation,
inspection, control and testing of piping systems for construction services. Includes
piping systems in the building or at the property boundaries.
B31.11 - 2002 - transport of slurry from piping systems
Design, construction, inspection, the safety requirements of the manure pipeline systems.
Covers the piping systems that transport aqueous slurries of non-hazardous materials, such as the
carbon, minerals and other solids between a centralized treatment plant for sludge and the
Reception floor.
B31G - 1991 - Manual to determine the remaining strength of corroded pipes
