Unconfined Compression Test in Soils

This document describes the simple compression test to determine the unconfined compressive strength of cohesive soils. The test involves the preparation of a cylindrical soil specimen and its controlled axial compression in a press. The objectives are to determine the compressive strength and cohesion of the soil. The theoretical concepts, equipment, procedure, and methods for analyzing results are explained.

SIMPLE COMPRESSION ESSAY

I. INTRODUCTION

The unconfined compression test, also known as the test of

simple compression or uniaxial compression test allows obtaining a load value
last of the soil at a lower cost using an unaltered soil sample carved in
cylinder shape, generally with a height/diameter ratio between 2 and 2.5. it is related to
with the shear resistance of the soil. This testing method is only applicable to
cohesive materials that do not expel water during the loading stage of the test and that
they maintain their intrinsic resistance after removing the pressures of
confinement, like clays or cemented soils. The dry friable soils,
cracked materials, laminated, silts, peats, and sands cannot be
analyzed by this method to obtain significant values of resistance to
unconfined compression.

II. OBJECTIVES

This calculation is based on the fact that the minor principal stress is zero (since when
the soil is surrounded only by atmospheric pressure) and the angle of internal friction (α) of the
ground is supposed to be zero. Due to numerous studies, it has become evident that this
essay generally does not provide a reliable value for resistance to
cut of a cohesive soil, due to the loss of the lateral restraint provided by the
soil mass, the internal conditions of the soil such as the degree of saturation or the
pore pressure that cannot be controlled and the friction at the ends produced by
the support plates. However, if the results are interpreted correctly,

predominantly clayey that are saturated or nearly saturated. It will be possible to carry out
well, through a control in two ways, through a deformation control or
efforts. The first one is widely used, controlling the advance speed of

As the simple compression test in relatively impermeable clays is

it performs loading the test tube quite quickly, it turns out that, ultimately, it constitutes
also a test without drainage if the clay is saturated. Like the test of

axial deformation of 15% (whichever happens first). A speed will be chosen at which
the break occurs within a time frame of 1 to 10 minutes.
