Conservation Strategies for Peru's Mangroves

The document proposes solutions for the conservation of mangroves in Peru, including the creation of a financing fund, the implementation of restoration and reforestation programs, and the promotion of sustainable tourism. These measures would involve the collaboration of the State, local governments, the population, and businesses to protect mangroves and contribute to SDGs 14 and 15 on life below water and terrestrial ecosystems.

Solution proposals

In Peru, mangroves are of great importance for biodiversity and for

local communities, as they provide environmental services such as

protection against coastal erosion, fishing, and carbon capture.

They constantly face environmental threats, such as the

pollution, overexploitation, and deforestation. For the solution of

the problem requires the integration of conservation, adaptation, and measures

mitigation by entities such as the State, the governments

regional/local, the population and both public and private companies.

Therefore, we will now present the measures that currently exist and

present innovative proposals that can take protective actions and

collaboration for the conservation of mangroves and the contribution to two

Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

Existing conservation measures

Currently, there are strategic plans for conservation and

sustainability of this ecosystem such as:

Develop a system of permanent control and surveillance in the area

marine and terrestrial typical of mangrove.

Involve the entities in control and surveillance actions.

tutelar (Navy, Border Police and Ecological Police) and to

other institutions of the competent sectors (Regional Government,

Production and Prosecutor's Office.

Promote citizen participation in the comprehensive control system

surveillance, through the creation and consolidation of committees of

environmental monitoring of user organizations.

Reduction of actions that significantly impact

against the conservation objects of the SNLMT (National Sanctuary)

the Mangroves of Tumbes.

Having adequate signage of the National Sanctuary

Tumbes Mangroves

Novel and viable proposal:

Creation of a funding fund for conservation of

mangroves: The State, in collaboration with private companies and

international organizations, could establish a specific fund for

funding mangrove conservation projects. This fund would be fed

from voluntary contributions of companies, donations, and funds from

corporate social responsibility

2. Implementation of restoration and reforestation programs: It

they would develop restoration and reforestation programs for mangroves

in degraded areas. This would include active participation from the

local population in the planting and care of mangrove seedlings, with

economic incentives and training to promote their

involvement.

3. Promotion of sustainable tourism in mangroves: It would be fostered

the development of sustainable tourism activities in the areas of

mangroves, providing job opportunities and generation of

income for local communities. This would include the implementation

of responsible tourism practices, environmental education for the

visitors and the creation of tourist circuits that highlight the

importance of mangroves.

Benefits for the proposed SDGs:

[Link] 14: Life Below Water: The conservation of mangroves contributes

directly to this goal, since mangroves are habitats

crucial for various marine species. The proposed measures

they will help protect marine biodiversity and promote practices

sustainable fisheries, ensuring underwater life and ecosystems

associates.

[Link] 15: Life of terrestrial ecosystems: Mangroves are a

ecosystem that combines marine and terrestrial characteristics, and its

conservation contributes to the protection of terrestrial ecosystems in

The proposal aims to restore degraded areas and promote

sustainable management practices, which will help maintain the life of the

related terrestrial ecosystems.

The presented proposal seeks to address the environmental issues of the

mangroves in Peru through conservation, adaptation, and measures

mitigation. The creation of a financing fund, the implementation of

restoration and reforestation programs, promoting sustainable tourism

innovative and viable actions that involve collaboration between the

State, regional and local governments, the population, and businesses. These

measures will contribute to the conservation of mangroves and the achievement of the SDGs

14 and 15, protecting underwater life and terrestrial ecosystems.
