Beam Formwork Construction Guide

This document describes the steps for creating a wooden formwork for a reinforced concrete beam as part of a practical work session. It first presents the purpose of the formwork, the different types of formworks and necessary materials, and then details the steps for preparing the mold and ensuring the stability of the formwork.

1
I. The aim of the practical work

The purpose of this lab is to manufacture, assemble, and set up a traditional wooden formwork of a
reinforced concrete beam.

II. Bibliographic Research

The role of formwork

The formwork is meant to hold and contain the fresh concrete until itshardeningand to confer upon him
the desired form.

2. The design of formworks

The formwork must:

To be sufficiently rigid and stable to support the thrust of fresh concrete (especially
in the case of fluid or self-compacting concretes), without deforming even during the phase of
vibration and ensure the retention of concrete until its setting and hardening;
Be non-absorbing
Be stable to ensure safety on the construction site
Be watertight to prevent leaks ofmilkinessparticularly at the foot of the braces and at the joints, and to
the fitting of the mannequins
Allow to achieve the desired surface texture to meet specific requirements.
architectural,
Be "removable" so as not to damage the concrete during stripping.

Invariability and stability:

A formwork must be rigid under the pressure of the concrete and during its vibration. Compliance with
Dimensional tolerances of the work directly depend on this criterion.

The design of the formwork must therefore aim to ensure this rigidity and stability.
considering the static pressure exerted by the concrete (in common cases 2 to 6 t/m2 depending on the height of the
concreting) and the dynamic constraints resulting from the vibration (which vary according to the mode of
vibration and the type of vibrators). The formwork must also be stable against wind forces and
possible shocks.

3. The different types of formwork

Wooden formwork:
Sawable and nailable material, wood is one of the first materials used for making
formwork. Due to its texture and its assembly possibilities, wooden formwork offers numerous
advantages for structured exposed concrete and for the
works of complex and non-repetitive shapes.

The boards used for the formwork must be

thick enough to prevent warping.

The characteristics of wood change over the course of

reusabilityporositylower, surface wear), these
modifications may have an influence on the shade and
the appearance of the facing.

allows for time savings during implementation as well as
of a well flat surface.

The formwork elements have an almost indefinite lifespan.

unlimited and it provides a stronger resistance than wood
in the face of the pressure exerted by fresh concrete.

This type of formwork is mainly used for large

achievements.

of coating and come off easily. This type of
Formwork is interesting for obtaining varied reliefs, thanks to thermoformed matrices inPVCwhere in
polyethylene, or to matrices sculpted in expanded polystyrene.

Climbing formworks:
For tall and repetitive constructions, it is interesting to be able to hoist the formwork, not to
with the help of a crane, but with jacks fixed to the formwork itself and resting on the already concreted part
and hardened. This is a climbing formwork that allows successive concrete pours. The use of
Climbing formwork is very common for bridge piers or tanks. They are most of the time
custom made according to the geometry of the structure.

The sliding formworks:

simple geometric elevations: bridge piers, silos, or for the construction of concrete safety barriers:
GBA. This technique helps to avoid concrete rework.

3
The vertical formwork:

The vertical formwork is used to create walls, sheets, and columns.

A vertical formwork consists in particular of:

of a faceplate made of plywood or steel

of aframeworkin metal or in wood
of a device for adjusting verticality.

The lost formwork:

Lost formworks are very common for the construction of horizontal elements. They present a
speed of execution, simplicity of materials, integration of reinforcements, handling
simplified, such are the advantages of these solutions.

IV. The steps to create formwork

Preparation of the mold:

In this lab, we used a wooden formwork. The mold must be sufficiently rigid and stable to
support the fresh concrete pushing.
We must choose the boards and the suitable beam and saw them to obtain the exact measurements (if
It is necessary) considering the planned dimension for the beam (22x21).

Ensure the stability of the formwork:

To help the formwork hold in place, wooden supports were used.

Note: It is necessary to check the stability of the formwork using a level, also to ensure the
regularity of the boards. And of course, we don't forget to check the measurements as we go along.
work.

V. Conclusion

To conclude, we can say that formwork is the essential tool for implementation.
concrete work. The creation of a formwork, the supply or manufacturing of this material, the pouring of
concrete, the finishes on which the quality of the formwork has a main influence.

All these elements contribute to nearly sixty percent of the added value provided by the company.
main work in the construction of a structure. This proportion well illustrates the primary importance of a
formwork and its design in the economy of a construction process.
