Water Supply Systems in Urban Planning

The document discusses basin-type roofs, which are structures designed for the direct collection of rainwater. They consist of a sloped roof that guides the water to a storage tank by gravity. The roof must be waterproof, smooth, and free of deformities to achieve high runoff. Gutters capture the rainwater and direct it to the storage tank. Basin-type roofs help mitigate urban drainage problems such as flooding.

Basin type roof.
Urban planning has an impact on land use change and local hydrology.
accompanied by other negative effects. The continuous growth of cities has
increased the proportion of impervious areas. The progressive sealing
uncontrolled surface alteration disrupts the hydrological cycle reducing the response
from a basin to a rainfall event, increasing the volume of drained water and,
therefore, reducing the recharge to the aquifers.
Furthermore, the growth of cities without urban planning can lead to the
alteration of natural courses, generating the need to build channels
artificial structures that eventually lead to worse problems in terms of drainage
urban, such as flooding, collapse of longitudinal and transversal drainage systems and
delays during the working hours of the residents, in addition to the problems
social issues caused by the reasons mentioned above.
Roof gutters. They are structures designed for the direct collection of water from
rain composed basically of two sections: the roof, which serves as a
contribution area and evaporation retardant, below this is located the
tank or storage cistern. The roof is made up of two surfaces
that converge in a central channel which allows rainwater to be conducted
directly by gravity to the cistern. To indicate the storage level, a
a piezometer on the outer wall of the tank. The water conduction system
consists of an outlet valve, followed by a pipe that ends in a
key for public use.
System components The components of the roof catchment system
they are the following:

Roof
The roof is the most important component of the system. It must be made of material
impermeable, smooth and uniform (without deformities) so that the coefficient of
runoff is high (above 0.8 or 80%). In rural areas, the materials
Construction materials vary widely. The most common are: galvanized sheet, sheet
asbestos (material that may have usage restrictions in some countries),
clay or concrete tiles. The roof must be kept clean, free of leaves and other debris.
debris, so that the collected water is of good quality.
Gutters
The gutters are the structures that are placed at the part where the roof ends.
to capture the water that flows and falls down the slope and direct it to a place of
storage. The channels must have the following characteristics:
• Dimensions suitable for the runoff volume.
• Uniform slope towards the conduction pipe.
• Sufficient support structure to bear the weight of the water when it is
under full load.
• They must be kept clean, without obstacles to movement of the
runoff.
• Sufficient outlet for maximum flow.
