MIC-205: Fluid Mechanics

Tutorial 8: Differential Analysis and Barnoulli’s Equation

Semester: Autumn 2024-25

Problem 1: Steady, inviscid, incompressible flow from left to right over a stationary cylinder of radius
a is represented by the following flow field

𝒂 𝟐 𝒂 𝟐
̂
⃗ = 𝑼 [𝟏 − ( ) ] 𝐜𝐨𝐬 𝜽 𝒓̂ − 𝑼 [𝟏 + ( ) ] 𝐬𝐢𝐧 𝜽 𝜽

where U is the free stream velocity. Obtain an expression for the pressure distribution along a stream
line forming the surface of the cylider. Also, determine the stagnation points and points where the static
pressure on the surface of the cylinder is the same as that of the free stream pressure.

Problem 2: The water flow rate through the siphon is 5 L/s, its temperature is 20 0C, and the pipe
diameter is 25 mm. Compute the maximum allowable height, h, so that the pressure at point A is above
the vapor pressure of the water (Assume the flow is frictionless.).

Problem 3: For the fire hose shown in figure, determine the maximum flow rate achievable.
Ans: 66.1 m3/hr

Problem 4: A steady water jet is directed up from a nozzle of exit diameter 600 mm2 with velocity
V1 6.3 m/s. as shown. At point 2, a horizon plate is placed. Determine velocity and stagnation pressure
at point 2. Also, determine pressure distribution over the plate
