INTERPRETATIVE GEOTECHNICAL REPORT

ON GROUND INVESTIGATION

PLOT NO. 01, STREET NO. 10, SECTOR D,

DHA PHASE II, ISLAMABAD

1.0 INTRODUCTION

On the instructions of Client, a site investigation has been carried out by

Geocrust at Plot No. 01, Street No. 10, Sector D, DHA Phase II, Islamabad
on the site of proposed residential building.
The object of the investigation was to determine the ground and
groundwater conditions at the site and to provide information that would
assist the designer in the geotechnical aspects of the design of the
proposed works. The scope of the investigation was determined by the
designer.
An interpretative report has been requested, including recommendations
on the design of proposed foundations.
The site work, which comprised three (03) light percussion boreholes up to
maximum depth of 25 ft from EGL, was carried out on 22th August, 2025.

2.0 THE SITE AND GEOLOGY

This area is characterized by several mountain and hill ranges, which

include the Southern Hazara range, the Margala and Murree hills, and their
associated piedmont aprons. The stratigraphical succession exposed in the
project area ranges in age from Precambrian to Quaternary. Most of the
area is comprised of Sedimentary rocks and many stratigraphical
formations are encountered in the region in which the most notable
formation is Murree formation, which is comprised of Shale and
Sandstone.

GC/GT/25/605
Plot No. 01, Street No. 10, Sector D, DHA Phase II, Islamabad
The site is located at Plot No. 01, Street No. 10, Sector D, DHA Phase II,
Islamabad. The site is underlain by Silty Sand/Silty Clay type of fill deposits.
Further background research such as desk study was not required within
the terms of reference for the work.

3.0 PROPOSED DEVELOPMENT

It is proposed to construct a residential building which will consists of

double storey structure.
The scope of the investigation and the analyses and interpretative
reporting thereof is based on the development proposals outlined above.
If the development proposals for the site change, then the results of the
investigation and recommendations given should be reviewed by a
Geotechnical specialist to determine whether or not further investigation
or interpretative work is necessary.

4.0 METHOD OF INVESTIGATION

4.1 General

Before start of drilling of boreholes it was confirmed by the

client and/or its agents, that any kind of services are not present
at the location of the boreholes.
Details of the in-situ sampling and testing carried out, together
with the description of the strata encountered are given on the
borehole logs. An explanation of the symbols and abbreviations
used on the logs, together with the method of drilling is also
given in the borehole logs.
All samples were transported to the laboratory and office of
Geocrust for examination and testing as deemed necessary by
Geocrust to fulfil their instructions and as agreed by the
designer.

4.2 Drilling of Boreholes

Three, 5-inches (125mm) minimum diameter boreholes were

drilled using light percussion machine up to maximum depth of
25 ft from EGL. The borehole logs are given in Appendix A.
Disturbed samples were taken after every 5.0 ft depth interval
during boring in order to identify and give a record of the strata
encountered.
Standard penetration tests (SPT) using a split spoon (S) or a solid
60o cone (C) were carried out in the cohesive and granular
deposits. The results are shown as N values on the borehole logs
at the relevant depths.
If SPT N values results in refusal or in excess of 50, a value of 50
was taken and recorded on logs.
During drilling attention was given to recording any evidence of
filling. Attention was also given in recording water inflow in
order that the groundwater level beneath the site could be
established. Water levels at breaks in boring were recorded
where appropriate.
Where water was added to facilitate penetration of the soil
strata, this is noted on the field borehole logs.

4.3 Survey

The ground levels of the site with reference with the nearest
street and/ or road were recorded with visual inspection.
Coordinates of the boreholes was recoded with the help of GPS.
A borehole layout plan was also developed and given as Fig. 02.

5.0 RESULTS OF EXPLORATORY BOREHOLES

5.1 General

Borehole logs giving details of the strata encountered are

provided in the report. A location plan of site and boreholes
layout plan are also presented in the Figures.
The strata description given in the borehole logs, unless
otherwise noted, are compiled from an examination of the
disturbed samples only, together with the results of any field
and laboratory testing. Stiffness and relative density descriptions
are based on the results of the SPT and have not been amended
to take into account any overburden effects.

5.2 Strata Encountered

The boreholes encountered the following general succession of

strata referring with Road Level:
0 – 15 ft: Filling Material.
15 – 20 ft: Dense, Silty Sand.
Below 20 ft: Very Dense, Silty Sand with Gravels and was
found up to maximum explored depth.

5.3 Groundwater

Ground water table was not observed in the boreholes at the

time of site Investigation.

6.0 GEOTECHNICAL LABORATORY TESTING

Samples retrieved from boreholes were examined in the field and then
transported to testing laboratory for relevant laboratory testing. The
laboratory tests were conducted on selected soil samples to determine the
engineering characteristics of the subsurface strata. Following laboratory
test results are presented in Appendix “B” of this report:

2. Liquid Limit 02 ASTM D 4318

3. Plastic Limit 02 ASTM D 4318

4. Moisture Content 05 ASTM D 2216

7.0 SELECTION OF FOUNDATION TYPE

In order to be safe, the load carrying strata must be competent to sustain

the imposed loading without undergoing shear failure, and at the same
time settlements of the foundations must not exceed the tolerable limits.
Therefore, the load carrying characteristics of the strata must be evaluated
keeping in view these two considerations.
7.1 Bearing Capacity Analysis

The subsurface strata indicates that the load carrying strata

mainly consists of recent fill up to 15 ft depth from street level.
Shallow foundations cannot be placed on such strata.
It is recommended to transmit structure load via deep
foundation i.e., Pile foundations. As mentioned earlier
subsurface strata mainly consists of recent fill up to 15 ft depth
from street level. This fill material will not contribute in the load
carrying capacity (Skin Friction) of the pile rather induce
negative skin friction. It is recommended that pile foundation
should penetrate into hard strata / natural strata.
Load carrying capacity for different pile diameters were
calculated and plotted is shown in Figures. The bearing capacity
calculation of Pile foundation is based on Meyerhof’s method for
tip resistance and Method for skin friction.

8.0 RESERVATIONS

Geocrust has prepared this report for this project “Geotechnical Site
Investigations of Plot No. 01, Street No. 10, Sector D, DHA Phase II,
Islamabad” as per Instruction received from the Client. This report is
provided for the exclusive use of the proposed building and purpose as
described in the report. It should not be used for other projects or by a
third party. In preparing this report, Geocrust has necessarily relied upon
information provided by the client.
Any interpolation or extrapolation of strata from exploratory holes is an
estimate only of the likely stratification and is subject to the interpretation
of the reader. The borehole logs should be read in conjunction with the
whole report rather part. The description of the ground conditions and
engineering interpretation that follows is based on the results of the
boreholes and field and laboratory testing carried out. There may be
ground conditions at the site which have not been revealed by the
investigation.
