Knowing About Operating System

Q1 What is an Operating System?


Ans:- Operating System is an interface between user and a machine. It is one of the system
software which controls the overall execution of instruction in our machine.

Q2 What are the differences between CLI and GUI Operating System?
Ans;-

Q3 Define File, Folder,Clipboard and RecycleBin.


Ans
A FILE is a common storage unit in a computer and all programs and data are written or stored into a
file and read from a file. It contains a filename with extension.

A FOLDER is a container that holds one or more files. A folder can also contain another folder called
subfolders. It provide a way to organize files. They are also called Directories or Sub directories.

Recycle bin is a holding area for deleted files/folders. As long as deleted files/folders are in recycle
bin, they can be restored or undeleted

Clipboard is a temporary memory buffer provided by the OS to store data for short term in a
computer application. It is used to hold copied or cut data temporarily while transferring the data
within and between application programs. SO when you copy/cut data, it temporarily stay in the
clipboard.

Q4 What is the difference between cut and copying a folder?


Ans:-Difference between copying and moving the files and folders

Copying of files or folders means that along with the original copy of the selected files and folders, a
new copy of them is created at the specific location.
Moving of files and folders means selected files and folders are removed from the original
location and get placed at the designated location.

Basic Computer Maintenance
Q1 What is Computer Maintenance? Discuss its importance.
Ans:- It refers to the actions carried out so as to keep a computer in a good state of working. It
includes:-
1) Physical Cleaning
2) Internal Cleaning
3) Keeping Backup and updated software

Importance of Computer maintenance:-


1) It detects issues early, before they become problem
2) It prevents against Virus and malware
3) It speed up your computer
4) It keeps our OS and Software's up-to-date.
5) It maximizes software efficiency

Q2 Define Worms and Trojan Horse. Write down the damages caused by viruses. Also discuss how
we can prevent our system form the virus?
Ans:- 1) Worms:- They are self-replicating programs which eats up the entire disk space or
memory.
2) Trojan Horse:-It is a program that appears to be harmless but actually performs malicious
functions like deleting or damaging files.

Damages Caused by Viruses


1) Damage or delete files
2) Slow down your computer
3) Invade your e-mail program

Ways to Prevent Computer Security Threats


1) Use of FIREWALL 2) Use Antivirus
3) Use Anti-Spyware 4) Use Strong Passwords
