CHAPTER 11

Kinematics of a Particle

Problem 12.47 (H)

A two-stage rocket is fired vertically from rest at s = 0 with the acceleration as shown.
After 30 s the first stage, A, burns out and the second stage, B, ignites. Plot the v–t and s–
t graphs which describe the motion of the second stage for 0 ≤t ≤ 60 s

Problem 12.67 (H)

The v-s graph of a cyclist traveling along a straight road is shown. Construct the a–s graph.

Problem 11.16
A projectile enters a resisting medium at x = 0 with an initial velocity V0 = 900 ft/s and
travels 4 in. before coming to rest. Assuming that the velocity of the projectile is defined
by the relation V = Vo - kx, where v is expressed in ft/s and x is in feet, determine (a) the
initial acceleration of the projectile, (b) the time required for the projectile to penetrate
3.9 in. into the resisting medium.

Problem 11.25
The acceleration of a particle is defined by the relation a = -kv2.5, where k is a constant.
The particle starts at x = 0 with a velocity of 16 mm/s, and when x = 6 mm the velocity is
observed to be 4 mm/s. Determine
(a) the velocity of the particle when x = 5 mm

(b) the time at which the velocity of the particle is 9 mm/s.

Problem 11.42
Automobiles A and B are traveling in adjacent highway lanes and at t = 0 have the
positions and speeds shown. Knowing that automobile A has a constant acceleration of
1.8 ft/s2 and that B has a constant deceleration of 1.2 ft/s2 , determine
(a) when and where A will overtake B
(b) the speed of each automobile at that time.

2
Problem 12.78 (H)
A rocket is fired from rest at x = 0 and travels along a parabolic trajectory described by y2
1
= [120(103)x] m .If the x component of acceleration is ax = ( t2) m/s2,where t is in seconds,
4
determine the magnitude of the rocket’s velocity and acceleration when t = 10 s

Problem 12.121 (H)

The car passes point A with a speed of 25 m/s after which its speed is defined by
v = (25 – 0.15s) m/s. Determine the magnitude of the car’s acceleration when it reaches
point B, where s = 51.5 m and x = 50 m.

Problem 12.125 (H)

The car travels around the circular track having a radius of r = 300 m such that when it is
at point A it has a velocity of 5 m/s, which is increasing at the rate of 𝑣̇ = (0.06t) m/s2,
where t is in seconds. Determine the magnitudes of its velocity and acceleration when it
has traveled one-third the way around the track

3
Problem 12.138 (H)
The motorcycle is traveling at 40 m/s when it is at A. If the speed is then decreased at
𝑣̇ = - (0.05 s) m/s2, where s is in meters measured from A, determine its speed and
acceleration when it reaches B.

Problem 12.141 (H)

A package is dropped from the plane which is flying with a constant horizontal
velocity of vA = 150ft/s. Determine the normal and tangential components of
acceleration and the radius of curvature of the path of motion
(a) at the moment the package is released at A, where it has a horizontal
velocity of vA = 150ft/s and
(b) just before it strikes the ground at B.

4
Problem 12.145 (H)
Particles A and B are traveling counter-clockwise around a circular track at a constant
speed of 8 m/s. If at the instant shown the speed of A begins to increase by (at)A = (0.4sA)
m/s2 where sA is in meters, determine the distance measured counterclockwise along the
track from B to A when t = 1s. What is the magnitude of the acceleration of each particle
at this instant?

Problem 12.219 (H)

At the instant shown, cars A and B are traveling at speeds of 55 mi/h and 40 mi/h,
respectively. If B is increasing its speed by 1200 mi/h2, while A maintains a constant speed,
determine the velocity and acceleration of B with respect to A. Car B moves along a curve
having a radius of curvature of 0.5 mi

5
Problem 12.227 (H)
At the instant shown, cars A and B are traveling at velocities of 40 m/s and 30 m/s,
respectively. If B is increasing its velocity by 2 m/s2, while A maintains a constant velocity,
determine the velocity and acceleration of B with respect to A. The radius of curvature at
B is rB = 200 m.

Problem 12.205 (H)

If block A of the pulley system is moving downward at 6 ft/s while block C is moving down
at 18 ft/s, determine the relative velocity of block B with respect to C.

6
Problem 11.56 (B)
Block A starts from rest at t = 0 and moves downward with a constant acceleration of 6
in./s2. Knowing that block B moves up with a constant velocity of 3 in./s, determine
(a) the time when the velocity of block C is zero
(b) the corresponding position of block C.

Problem 11.57 (B)

Block B starts from rest, block A moves with a constant acceleration, and slider block C
moves to the right with a constant acceleration of 75 mm/s2. Knowing that at t = 2s the
velocities of B and C are 480 mm/s downward and 280 mm/s to the right, respectively,
determine
(a) the accelerations of A and B
(b) the initial velocities of A and C
(c) the change in position of slider block C after 3 s.

7
Problem 11.59 (B)
The system shown starts from rest, and each component moves with a constant
acceleration. If the relative acceleration of block C with respect to collar B is 60 mm/s2
upward and the relative acceleration of block D with respect to block A is 110 mm/s2
downward, determine
(a) the velocity of block C after 3 s
(b) the change in position of block D after 5 s.
