3.

4 Solving Absolute Value Equations and Inequalities

Steps:

1. Isolate the absolute value expression

2. If absolute value = a negative number---No Solution!

3. Set the quantity inside the absolute value bars equal to the value on
the other side AND its opposite

4. Solve both equations for 2 solutions

a) 2 x −1 + 2 = 6

b) 2 x + 6 = 4 x + 4

1
c) 2 x − 1 + 5 = −3
2
Absolute Value Inequalities c) 2 x − 4 + 5  3
Steps:

1. Isolate the absolute value expression

2. If the number on the other side of the inequality sign is

negative, your equation either has no solution or all real
numbers as solutions.

3. Set up a compound inequality Absolute Value Inequality Applications

1. If greater than a number, x  a ,then set up an "or"
compound inequality that looks like this:
x < -a or x > a

If less than a number, x  a , then set up an ”and” or

three-part compound inequality that looks like this:
-a < x < a

4. Solve the inequalities (watch out for multiplying and dividing

by a negative) and graph on a number line

a) x − 3 − 4  −1

b) 9 − 3x  6
