TEACHER’S NOTE:
1. Next week, we are going to play a describing-and- guessing game. One student will stand
and I will tell him/her the name of another student to describe. You should describe that
student using kind or neutral words about him/her appearance and personality. Do not say
anything that might bother, upset or offend him/her. After the description, the class will try to
guess who it is. Please keep your sentence short and use two adjectives about appearance and
three about personality.
2. In this activity, when you say an adjective, another student should say the opposite
adjective. If the answer is correct, that student gets point.
EXPLANATION: In English, to ask about someone’s physical appearance we use the question:
What does/do he/she/they look like? (It means: How does he/she look?)
Examples: What does your best friend look like?
He is tall.
He has got short black hair.
He is well-built with short curly hair and bright blue eyes.
He is of medium- height. He is a little fat. He has a moustache and wears glasses.
She is slim. She has glasses.
She has got long blonde hair and blue eyes.
He is middle aged. He is in fifties.
She has dark eyes, wavy brown hair,and a nice figure. She looks great.
EYES: big eyes, small eyes, blue eyes, brown eyes, green eyes, almond-shaped eyes, bright eyes,
dark eyes, eyebrows, eyelashes, hazel
HEIGHT: tall, short, quite tall, not very tall, average height, of medium height,
WEIGHT AND BUILT: slim means being gracefully thin whereas skinny means being
unattractively thin.
Chubby: Usually used for children. Babies or faces to mean pleasantly fat in a cute or way. It
often has a positive or affectionate meaning. It can be used for adults or objects (like fruit,
cushions, etc. Example: The baby has chubby cheeks.
Plump: A neutral or polite word to describe someone who is a little overweight or well-rounded.
It doesn’t sound negative, but it’s less cute than chubby. Example: She is a plump woman with a
round face.
Medium built, well-built, medium weight, overweight.
HAIR: long hair, short hair, curly hair, straight hair, black hair, brown hair, blond hair,wavy hair,
dyed hair, shoulder-length hair, bald, straight, spiky, fringe, ginger ,auburn, thick, thinning,
plaits, ponytail.
FACE: round face, beard, moustache, oval face, thin face, freckles, wrinkles
BODY: tall, short, slim, fat, overweight, well- built, weak, average height
OTHER: glasses, young, old, beautiful, handsome, middle-aged, pretty, good-looking, attractive,
brunette, adult, in his/her twenties, thirties.
EXPLANATION: In English, to describe someone’s character traits (personality), we use the
question:
What is he /she like? She is kind and talkative. He is smart and honest. He also has a good
sense of humor.
What are they like? They are friendly and helpful.
What are you like? I am shy but hardworking.
