Module 1: Information Systems & Data Resource Management
Topic: Definition and Components of an Information System
Lesson Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
1. Define an Information System (IS).
2. Identify and describe the components of an IS.
3. Explain the role of IS in an organization with examples.
Introduction (10 minutes)
Ask students: “When you send a WhatsApp message, what makes it possible for it to reach
your friend?”
Discuss how information is collected, processed, stored, and shared.
Link to the concept of Information Systems.
Main Content (70 minutes)
1. Definition of an Information System
An Information System is an organized combination of people, hardware, software,
networks, and data resources that collects, processes, stores, and distributes information to
support decision making in an organization.
2. Components of an Information System
People: Users, IT specialists, managers.
Hardware: Computers, servers, input/output devices.
Software: Applications and system software used to process data.
Data: Raw facts that are processed into meaningful information.
Processes/Procedures: Rules and methods for using IS effectively.
Networks: Communication systems linking people and devices.
Diagram: Basic Structure of an Information System
[Insert diagram here: People ↔ Hardware ↔ Software ↔ Data ↔ Networks]
3. Examples in Real Life
Banks: ATMs & online banking systems.
Schools: Student Management Systems.
Hospitals: Patient Record Systems.
4. Importance of Information Systems
Helps in decision-making.
Improves efficiency and productivity.
Facilitates communication and data sharing.
Exercises
Classwork (15 minutes):
1. Define an Information System in your own words.
2. List and briefly describe the 5 major components of an IS.
3. Give two examples of Information Systems you use in daily life.
Homework:
Draw a simple diagram showing the interaction between the components of an Information
System.
Write one page on: “How Information Systems are used in my school.”
