BASIC ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING
Time : Three Hours
Maximum Marks : 60
Note : Question paper has three Sections. Read carefully
instructions for each Section.
Section—A
(Very Short Answer Type Questions)
1. Attempt all questions. Each question carries 1 mark.
(a) Define Node and Junction.
(b) What do you mean by Active and Passive
elements ?
(c) Define Resonance.
(d) An inductance of negligiable resistance whose
reactance is 22  at 200 Hz is connected to a
200 V, 50 Hz power line. What is the value of
inductance ?
(e) Define Q-factor of a coil.
(f) What do you mean by a voltage regulation of a
transformer ?

(g) Draw the approximate equivalent circuit of a


transformer referred to primary side.
(h) What purpose is served by the pole shoe in a d. c.
machine ?
(i) What do you mean by synchronous speed of a
3-  induction motor ?
(j) Explain the principle of electromechanical energy
conversion.
(k) List the various losses occurs in a d. c.
machine.
(l) A 50 Hz, 4 pole, 3-  induction motor has a rotor
current of frequency 2 Hz. Determine the slip.
Section—B
(Short Answer Type Questions)
2. Attempt any six questions. Each question carries
4 marks.
(a) State and prove maximum power transfer
theorem.
(b) Prove that current lags behind the voltage by 90°
in a pure inductive a. c. circuit.
(c) Derive an expressions for lower and upper cut-off
frequencies for R-L-C series circuit.
(d) Explain core and shell type transformers.
(e) Derive the condition for maximum efficiency of a
transformer.
(f) Explain the different types of induction motors.

(g) Using Thevenin’s theorem, find the current in


6  resistor.

(h) Explain the necessity of a starters in a d. c. motor.

(Long Answer Type Questions)

3. Attempt any three questions. Each question carries


8 marks.
(a) Explain Superposition theorem. For the circuit
find I using Superposition theorem.

(b) Explain S. C. test performed on a single-phase


transformer.

(c) Find the average value, r. m. s. value, form factor


and peak factor for the half-wave rectified
alternating current.
(d) Derive the relationships between line voltage and
phase voltage, line current and phase current for a
star-connected, 3-phase balanced system.
(e) Draw and explain torque-slip characteristics of a
3-phase induction motor.
