Introduction

Driver’s safety does not stop in the parking lot as research shows that these are
considered to be hazardous places. The primary rule of driving is to stay vigilant of the
surroundings and operating a vehicle in a parking lot is no exception.

As per National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), “267 people are
killed and 15,000 injured each year by drivers not parking forward first, usually in driveways
or parking lots.” Numerous vehicles have large blind spots that can make parking and
turning difficult. Parking sensors, also known as parking aids, consist of ultrasonic sensors,
controllers, and sensors. These instruments are of great help when one reverse into tight
parking spaces, as well as alerting you to anything that may be behind your vehicle such as
high pavements, bollards, other vehicles and small children.

However, not all of the functioning cars possess this instrument or system. In fact, it
is only the modern and expensive vehicles that acquire Reverse Parking sensors. Taking this
into consideration, as well as the aforementioned statistics, constructing an Arduino
UNO-powered Reverse Parking Sensor will benefit car owners of any model.

Materials Needed

1) Arduino UNO

2) HC-SR04 Ultrasonic Sensor
3) BC548 NPN Transistor (any NPN Transistor can be used)
4) 5V Buzzer
5) 1N4007 PN Junction Diode
6) 1KΩ Resistor (1/4 Watt)
7) Mini Breadboard
8) Connecting Wires
9) 5V Power Supply

Objectives

1. Rear Collision Avoidance:

- The main objective is to assist the driver in avoiding collisions with obstacles at the
rear during parking maneuvers.
2. Distance Measurement:
- The system uses ultrasonic sensors at the back of the car to measure the distance
between the car and nearby objects, providing real-time feedback to the driver.
3. Alerting System:
- The system alerts the driver with a buzzer when the vehicle gets too close to an
object at the back.
4. Ease of Parking:
- By providing accurate distance measurements and timely alerts, the system makes it
easier for drivers to park their vehicles, especially in tight spaces.
Significance of the Project

1. Enhancing road safety:

- Reverse Parking Sensor is a groundbreaking technology that utilizes advanced
sensors and algorithms to detect potential collision risks on the road.
2. Benefit to drivers:
- The primary beneficiaries of Reverse Parking Sensor are, undoubtedly, the drivers
themselves. This innovative system provides them with real-time information about
potential hazards and dangerous situations that may not be perceptible to the human
eye.
3. Benefit to pedestrians:
- By incorporating Reverse Parking Sensor into vehicles, drivers become more aware
of these vulnerable users, reducing the likelihood of accidents
4. Benefit to emergency services:
- This feature enables emergency responders to be better prepared for any potential
injuries or hazards they may encounter, thus enabling a more efficient and effective
response.
5. Societal benefits:
- Holds immense societal benefits in terms of economic and resource savings.

Scope and Delimitation

Scope:

1. Automotive Application Focus: This project is exclusively designed for the automotive
industry, with the primary goal of enhancing safety during the process of reverse parking.

2. Vehicle Integration: The system aims to be integrated into various types of vehicles, to
assist drivers in safe and efficient reverse parking maneuvers.

3. Obstacle Detection: The project focuses on detecting potential obstacle in the vehicle's
path to enhance reverse parking safety using ultrasonic sensors and providing timely
warnings.

4. Customization: It provides customization options for vehicle manufacturers to adapt the

system to specific vehicle types and user preferences.

Delimitations:

1. Prototyping Stage: This project focuses on the prototype and development stage, and it is
not intended for immediate deployment in production vehicles. Further testing, validation,
and certification are required for real-world use.
2. Limited to Non-Autonomous: The system is designed as an advanced driver-assistance
feature to aid human drivers during reverse parking. It does not enable fully autonomous
parking.

3. Limited to Reverse Parking: While the project aims to enhance reverse parking safety, it
does not encompass features for autonomous driving, forward collision avoidance, or other
driving scenarios.

4. Environmental Factors: The system assumes typical parking environments and may not
account for extreme weather conditions, complex terrains, or off-road situations.

5. Integration Challenges: The project acknowledges that integrating such systems into
existing vehicle architectures may pose technical and compatibility challenges that are
beyond its scope.

This scope and delimitation framework ensure that the Arduino car reverse parking sensor
project maintains its focus on enhancing reverse parking safety within the automotive
context. It also recognizes its current limitations and the necessity for further development
and testing for practical implementation.
