Rope Waves
In this lab activity, you will work with a partner to explore the properties of rope waves. Follow the instructions
carefully and make observations as you conduct the experiments.
Objective
- To observe the shape of a wave.
- To observe the effect of increasing the amplitude to the wave.
Materials Needed
- Rope string
- Partner
Procedure
A. Creating Pulse Waves
- Each partner holds an end of the rope.
- One person keeps their end still while the other person creates short wave pulses by lifting the rope up and
down quickly.
- Observe the motion of the waves as they travel from one end of the rope to the other. -
Describe the appearance of the waves and how they move.
B. Continuous Wave Stream
- Once you're comfortable creating pulse waves, try to create a continuous stream of waves by maintaining a
consistent motion.
- Observe how the continuous wave stream differs from individual pulse waves.
C. Increasing Amplitude
- Experiment with increasing the amplitude of the waves you create. How do you physically achieve this? -
Describe what you observe as you increase the amplitude of the waves.
- What happens to the appearance of the waves and the motion of the rope?
Observation and Analysis
- Draw a labeled diagram illustrating a wave on the rope. Label the amplitude. [3]
- Measure the wavelength of a wave. [1]
………………………………………………
- Calculate the frequency of the waves. How many complete wave cycles pass a point in 10 seconds? [1]
(Frequency = 1 / Time period)
