1-Hour ESL Lesson Plan (First Lesson)
1. Warm-up & Introduction (5–10 min)
Objective: Build rapport, reduce anxiety, and start assessing listening/speaking.
- Greet the student and introduce yourself in simple English.
- Ask a few light questions to check basic communication skills:
• What’s your name?
• Where are you from?
• Do you study or work?
• Why do you want to learn English?
2. Needs Analysis & Goal Setting (5–10 min)
Objective: Understand their motivation and what they need English for.
- Ask:
• Do you need English for work, study, travel, or personal reasons?
• What skills are most important for you: speaking, listening, reading, or writing?
• Have you studied English before?
3. Level Check Activities (25 min)
Objective: Diagnose their level across skills.
Speaking & Listening (10 min): Show 3–4 pictures and ask the student to describe what they see.
Ask simple follow-up questions.
Reading (7 min): Provide a short, simple text (~100 words). Ask them to read aloud, then ask
comprehension questions.
Writing (8 min): Ask the student to write a short paragraph about themselves: Name, hometown,
family, hobbies, daily routine.
4. Feedback & Discussion (10 min)
Objective: Share first impressions, build confidence.
- Highlight strengths and areas to improve.
- Discuss how lessons will help achieve goals.
5. Mini-Lesson / Demo (5–10 min)
Objective: End with a small 'win' so the student feels progress.
Choose one weakness observed during the diagnostic and give a short focused practice activity.
6. Wrap-Up (2–3 min)
- Summarize what you learned about the student.
- Explain next steps.
- Optional homework: Write 2–3 sentences a day about their activities.
