The table illustrates the sales of Fairtrade-labelled coffee and bananas in 1999 and
2004 in the UK, Switzerland, Denmark, Belgium, Sweden.
Overall, the amount of coffee and bananas sales witnessed increases over the
period shown, with the UK showing the most pronounced change in coffee sales. It
is also clear that Switzerland remained the country which had by far the highest
sales for bananas.
Among the given country, regarding to coffee sales, the UK saw the most drastic
rise, from 1.5 million euros in 1999 to 20 million euros in 2004. Thereafter,
Switzerland also experienced an increase, doubling from 3 to 6 million euros,
representing a nearly twofold increase. Undergoing a similar growing trend, the
amount of sales of coffee in Denmark, Belgium and Sweden rose gradually, rising
from 1.8 to 2 million euros, 1 to 1.7 million euros and 0.8 to 1 million euros
respectively.
Turning to the banana sales, Switzerland remained the highest figures,
experiencing a significant increase from 15 million euros in 1999 to 47 million
euros in 2004. Then, the UK sales rose sharply, from 1 million to 5.5 million euros,
followed by Belgium ones, where sales grew from 0.6 to 4 million euros. Finally,
Sweden and Denmark showed a downward trend, with Sweden’s revenue dropping
from 1.8 to 1 million euros and Denmark’s figures declining from 2 to 0.9 million
euros.
