RESULT OF THE RESEARCH

4.1 Data Finding

Based on this research, the data analyzed in this study is about the

personality of the main character in the drama series Euphoria by using a literary

psychoanalytic approach. The theory that was used to determine the

psychoanalytic or personality of the main character Rue Bennet from Euphoria,

namely the theory of Sigmund Freud who said that there are 3 steps or structure of

personality that is carried out to determine a person's psychology, namely the id,

ego, and superego.

There are several findings data regarding the id, ego, and superego in the

Euphoria series, that is:

4.2 Data Analysis

4.2.1. ID Analysis in character Rue

Id is based on the pleasure principle, namely trying to obtain pleasure

and avoid pain. Or it can be said that the id is all about pleasure, biological

gratification, and desire to crave satisfaction. The id works by adhering to the

pleasure principle. The id seeks instant satisfaction with the wants and needs of

the human being. If these two are not met, a person can become tense, anxious, or

angry and can lead to depression or other mental disorders.

By seeking pleasure the id can also be used as a human being as an escape

from the pressures of life or for those who already have mental disorders. Rue are

one of examples of those who already has depression and use her id to avoid her

depression and find her needs pleasure.

In this scene analysis, Rue’s dialogue goes with “That moment when your breath

starts to slow” which shows that Rue has the satisfaction of pleasure (Id)

whenever this moment of her breath starts to slow after she consumes the drug. Id

works by adhering to the pleasure principle. Rue tells the audience that she trying

to seek her id instant satisfaction starting from this moment.

The continuing analysis of Rue’s dialogue goes with “And every time you

breathe, you breathe out all the oxygen you have” she continues to show her Id

to seek her instant satisfaction with the wants and needs of the human being, in

this case with her “Breath” are what she needs to start the process of the drug she

consumes to crave her pleasure based from Id will.

In this scene analysis when “Everything stopped” has a meaning that the pain that

Rue feels from having depression is all gone or she finally starts having the

pleasure that she wants or needs as a human being and as part of her Id.

A drug addict usually saw the drug in their Id as their satisfaction and pleasure to

avoid their negative feelings that can lead them to pain and that’s why is hard for

them to stop their addiction to this drug because they don’t what else that can free

them for pain and fulfill their human need. Rue’s character describes how a

person who become a drug addict finds “drugs” as a way to fulfill their id needs.

In this scene analysis “Your heart your lungs” in her dialogue, Rue said that her

heart and lungs stopped working, it may sound scary to normal people, but the

needs of the Id are different depending on the human itself. Every human being

has a different way of fulfilling the human needs of their Id. Like Rue in this

scene fulfills her human needs and satisfaction by consuming the drug.

In this scene analysis, Rue consumes drugs to fulfill her satisfaction. “Your lungs

and finally your brain” The explanation in this scene is the brain are the source

Of thoughts, The mind in the body will work to send thoughts, especially a

negative thoughts that humans can’t easily forget in the form of memories to the

heart, and the process of the human start to feel for that negative memories will

begin. This process sometimes can trigger negative emotions that are quite

disturbing to humans themselves namely feelings of tension, anxiety, and anger.

Negative thoughts like this are usually the cause and also one of the triggering

factors for humans to immediately fulfill their ID needs so they can avoid the pain

inside their body. In this case, the id needs in emotions. Like Rue, who a use drug

to stop her negative thoughts and having a panic attack.

In this analysis, Rue tells the audience that she tries to avoid the pain of her

feeling, her wishes, and what she wants to forget “And everything you feel and

wish and want to forget” Rue has a complex with herself after she passed away

and using the drug as the way of her forgetting the pain that she felt after losing

her father. In Id, humans obtain pleasure and avoid the pain that can be causing

mental problems. But in rue case, she already had depression after losing someone

she loved and her Id from basic human needs change to her needs to avoid her

pain.

In this dialogue analysis “Want to forget, it all just sinks.” She unconsciously

uses her id needs for a drug to forget the pain even for just a short second, This is

her way to avoid pain and fulfill the pleasure or satisfaction she needs by using

drugs based on id.

Rue saw her depression as a nightmare, this is why she used Drugs as her human

need, as her pleasure, and her id needs. It is confirmed from Euphoria season 1

episode 7 there is a scene when Rue talks about depression that is related to the

scene of season 1 episode 1. In episode 07 scene analysis the dialog goes with

“The other thing about depression is it kind of collapses time,” and “Suddenly

you find your whole days blending together to create endless and suffocating

loop. So you find yourself trying to remember the things that made you happy.”

The point that Rue tries to tell that she wanted to avoid her pain (id) by using

drugs is made clear in this dialogue and related to the scene in season 1 episode

one. And the final dialogue goes with “But slowly your brain begins to erase

every memory that ever brought you joy” that’s the way Rue uses drugs to bring

the happiness, the pleasure that she need even if it won’t bring her happy memory

because she only cares to forget the pain of being depressed with her Id, after all

the id moves based on human instincts or desires to fulfill their needs in

themselves. And the need for id in Rue is to relieve the pain that is in her mind

and heart. This kind of behavior would be both disruptive and socially

unacceptable. According to Freud, the id that Rue shows here are the attempts to

resolve the tension created by the pleasure principle through a primary process,

which involves forming a mental image of the desired object as a way of

satisfying a need.

4.2.2 Ego analysis in character Rue

The ego operates according to the reality principle; effort to obtain

satisfaction demanded by the id by preventing the occurrence of new stresses or

delaying pleasure until an object that can be found satisfy needs. The ego deals

with reality, trying to fulfill the desires of the id in a socially acceptable way. For

example, by delaying gratification and helping to relieve the tension the id feels if

a desire is not fulfilled immediately.

In this scene analysis the dialogue “And people” actually means Rue herself or

her perspective before start giving an explaning of how she can obtain her needs

of the drug in a more acceptable way. The function of this ego is in the conscious,

pre-conscious, and subconscious thought patterns. That is, this element is very

important to face the real world.

What does rue means in these scene of “just wanna find hope” are people just

wanna find hope based on their ego to fulfill their human needs (Id). Rue making

excuses and reason because her ego deals with the reality around her, Rue tries

to fulfill her desires of the id in a socially acceptable way by telling the audience

that she wants to find hope like any other people.

In this scene analysis, Sigmund Freud compared the id to a horse, while the ego to

its rider. The id provides power and the ability to move, while the ego directs

where the horse moves. Without the ego, the id can wander anywhere without

logical consideration. Rue tells the audience in this scene that “Hope” can be

obtained everywhere “And if not in reality” as long as it can be accepted (Ego).

In this dialogue analysis, Rue tells the audience how to obtain “Hope” or in her

perspective the pleasure of avoiding pain (Id). Rue uses her ego here to make the

audience understand what she wants to obtain in drugs but with the analogy

“Then in television” which means that people usually can find their hope in

television.

In this dialogue analysis, The ego understands that other people also have needs

and wants. “Unfortunately, I’m not it” In here Rue shows that based form her ego

she decided to be selfish even though she knew that her way of getting pleasure is

not a good thing.

In this scene analysis, When someone does something with the ego in mind, it

means that there is a calculation of the pros and cons of an action. They will not

necessarily do what they want arbitrarily. The ego is the executive (executor) of

the personality, which has two main tasks; Firstly, choosing which stimuli to

respond to and or which instincts will be satisfied according to the priority needs.

Rue’s dialogue “How to get away with being a drug addict” shows all the signs

of her ego in this scene with her showing that her stimuli are her drug addiction

and her priority is to cover herself from getting caught using the drugs.

In the scene of Euphoria season 2 episode 6 analysis, Rue once again shows her

ego and admits she is so nasty to everyone around her by using many ways to

make everyone accept her id needs (using Drugs). The dialogue in this scene goes

with “If I’m being honest about who I am, I’m a liar, a thief, I’m violent,

abusive, manipulative” and “Even if I got clean today no one would forget the

trauma of me being clean” Rue shows her ego in her point of view about forcing

everyone to accept her id. According to ego, The ego operates on the principle of

reality, which seeks to satisfy the desires of the id in realistic and socially

appropriate ways. The reality principle weighs the costs and benefits of an action

before deciding to act or abandon the impulse.

4.2.3. Superego analysis in character Rue

The superego is the combination of Id and ego, Superego operates using

idealistic principles as opposed to satisfaction of the Id and the realistic principle

of the Ego. Superego is a moral aspect of a personality that is obtained from

parental care or norms and values in society and is based on morals and

judgments about right and wrong.

Although the superego and ego can reach the same decision about

something, the superego's reasons for making decisions are based more on moral

values. While ego decisions are based more on what other people think.

In this scene analysis, Superego is related to the human perspective in responding

to a problem, for example around things that are considered bad by parents and

society. Generally, these are behaviors that are prohibited and have bad

consequences such as punishment, guilt, and remorse.

In Rue's case in this dialogue analysis “my dad died everybody would tell me that

he died for a reason”, her superego is shown by the words of people who try to

tell her that his father's death has a reason and Rue has to let go of her father's

death because she cannot continue to be trapped in her sadness and makes her felt

guilty all the time.

In this dialogue analysis, The superego also contains the rules and standards of

behavior according to the ego. The ego is also made to meet ideal standards and

realistic principles. In her dialogue “oh that used to piss me off” Rue shows her

ego along with the superego that she used to be so angry about what other people

said about her father’s death.

In this dialogue scene, Rue shows her superego that has no contact with the

outside world so the need for perfection that it strives for is unrealistic, not

realistic. In this scene “I would literally want a strangler”, Rue cannot accept

about ‘The reason’ that people used to tell her because is opposite with her ego of

ideal standards of death and her realistic principles about the meaning of a ‘father’

that she felt so angry about it even want to strangle those people.

In this dialogue analysis, The superego that Rue show in here based on dialogue

“Think what they’re actually saying is that you gotta give it a reason” because

Rue shows idealistic principles that are opposed to her satisfaction with the Id

(using the drug) and the realistic principle of her Ego (drug are her hope to keep

living). After all, Rue started using the drug after her father passed away.

Data 18 (scene 5)

Euphoria season 2 episode 8 duration 52:38– 52:40

The roots of the superego are the moral values of parents, introspection of that

human themselves, and the environment around them. It is a human way of

thinking about right and wrong. In this dialogue and scene analysis “You gotta

give it all a reason” Rue finally realizes that she was wrong all this time and start

fighting her pleasure of the id because she finally tries to accept the fact about her

father passed away for a reason.

Euphoria season 2 episode 8 duration 52:44– 52:47

In this scene and dialogue analysis, There are three functions of the superego; (1)

encourage the ego to replace realistic goals with moralistic goals, (2) block the

id's impulses, especially sexual and aggressive impulses that are contrary to

societal value standards, (3) the pursuit of perfection. Rue finally becomes more

realistic with moral support in her, can fight Id or her desire to always act

aggressively about taking drugs, and wants to be 'clean' from drugs with her

dialogue “Because I don’t want to hold on to this forever”.

Data 20 (scene 7)

Euphoria season 2 episode 8 duration 52:51– 52:53

In this scene and dialogue analysis, The superego is irrational in demanding

perfection, severely punishing the Id and ego's mistakes, both those that have

been done and are new to the mind. In this scene “I can’t I can’t hold on to it

forever” Rue seems to show her superego because she blames herself and doesn't

want to continue to follow her inner Id who uses drugs as a way to escape the

reality of her father's death.

In Rue’s final dialogue analysis in Euphoria season 2 episode 8, “I don’t know if

this feeling will last forever, but I am trying. I remember what Ali said the

thought of being a good person is what keeps me trying to be a good person”

according to the superego based from Rue dialogue, There are two parts to the

superego: The ego ideal includes rules and standards for good behavior. This

behavior includes those approved by parental authority figures and others.

Adhering to these rules leads to feelings of pride, value, and accomplishment.

And last, Conscience includes information about things that are considered bad by

parents and society. These behaviors are often prohibited and lead to bad

consequences or punishments, feelings of guilt, and remorse. The superego acts to

perfect and civilize our behavior. It works to suppress all the unacceptable urges

of the id and the struggle to make the ego act above more idealistic standards due

to realistic principles. The superego is present in the conscious, preconscious, and

unconscious.
