Human Digestive System
A Presentation
Introduction
The human digestive system is a complex series of organs and glands that processes food. It breaks down food into smaller components that the body can
absorb and use for energy, growth, and repair.
Mouth
- Digestion begins in the mouth. - Teeth chew the food into smaller pieces. - Saliva contains enzymes that start breaking down carbohydrates.
Esophagus and Stomach
- Esophagus: Muscular tube that pushes food to the stomach. - Stomach: Secretes gastric juices containing acid and enzymes that digest proteins. - Food
is churned and mixed into a semi-liquid form called chyme.
Small Intestine
- Main site of digestion and absorption. - Enzymes from pancreas and bile from liver aid digestion. - Nutrients absorbed into the bloodstream through villi.
Liver, Gallbladder & Pancreas
- Liver: Produces bile for fat digestion. - Gallbladder: Stores and releases bile. - Pancreas: Produces enzymes for digestion and regulates blood sugar.
Large Intestine, Rectum & Anus
- Large Intestine: Absorbs water and salts. - Rectum: Stores feces before elimination. - Anus: Removes solid waste from the body.
Functions of Digestive System
- Breaks down food into nutrients. - Absorbs nutrients for energy, growth, and repair. - Eliminates undigested waste from the body.
Healthy Habits for Digestive System
- Eat a balanced diet with fiber-rich foods. - Drink plenty of water. - Exercise regularly. - Avoid overeating and junk food.
