CBSE — Class VIII
Mathematics — Model Question Paper
Chapter: Rational Numbers
Maximum Marks: 30 | Duration: 1 hour
General Instructions:
1. All questions are compulsory.
2. Show all working clearly — one-word answers will not get full credit.
3. Use the simplest form for fractions unless asked otherwise.
4. Write neatly and attempt all questions in sequence.
Section A — (1 mark each) (6 × 1 = 6)
1. Define a rational number and give one example where the numerator is greater than the
denominator.
2. Write the additive inverse of -3/5. Explain in one line why your answer is correct.
3. Convert 0.375 into a rational number in lowest terms and show the steps.
4. Are rational numbers closed under subtraction? Give a justification with an example.
5. Find three rational numbers between -2 and -1. Which of them represents -1.6 on the number
line?
6. Explain in one line why 0 does not have a multiplicative inverse.
Section B — (2 marks each) (6 × 2 = 12)
7. Simplify: (-3/4) ÷ (9/16). Show the steps clearly.
8. Find the multiplicative inverse of 5/8. Why does 0 have no multiplicative inverse?
9. A shop gives a discount of 3/20 on an item priced at ■200. Find the discounted price.
10. Compare -7/12 and -5/8. Which is greater? Show the method and conclusion.
11. Which of the following statements is not correct? Justify with an example: (a) Rational numbers
are closed under addition, (b) Rational numbers are closed under subtraction, (c) Rational numbers
are closed under multiplication.
12. Find one-third of 9/4. Express in lowest terms.
Section C — (3 marks each) (4 × 3 = 12)
13. Shalini has to cut out circles of diameter 1 1/4 cm from an aluminium strip of dimensions 8 3/4
cm by 1 1/4 cm. How many full circles can she cut? Also calculate the wastage.
14. Find three rational numbers between -4 and 4. Represent any one of them on the number line
and explain how you chose them.
15. One recipe requires -1/2 cup of sugar, another requires 2 tablespoons of sugar. If 1 tablespoon
= 1/16 cup, how much more sugar does the first recipe need than the second?
16. Simplify: (4/3 – 3/5) ÷ (2/7 + 1/14). Write the final answer in lowest terms.
