2. CONTRIBUCIÓN DE LA ASIGNATURA A LA CARRERA
While descriptive statistics summarize the characteristics of a data set, inferential statistics helps to come to
conclusions and make predictions based on a small dataset. Statistical analysis can help companies cut
costs and improve workplace efficiency, among other benefits. Many businesses rely on statistical analysis
to organize collected information and predict future trends based on that data. While organizations have lots
of options on what to do with their big data, statistics is a way to examine that data as a whole, as well as
break it down into individual samples. Statistics is the cornerstone of successful business intelligence.
Inferential statistics offers a way to take the data from a representative sample and use it to draw larger
truths. It allows organizations to extrapolate beyond the data set, going a step further than descriptive
statistics. Statistical inference relies heavily on finding as representative a sample as possible from which to
draw conclusions about a wider population. As there will always be uncertainty about extrapolating from a
limited set of data to a wider population, statistical inference relies upon estimating uncertainty in
predictions. The goal of statistics II is to identify trends. A retail business, for example, might use statistical
analysis to find patterns in data that can be used to create a more positive customer experience and
increase sales.

7. NORMAS PARA EL DESARROLLO DEL CURSO
● All activities (workshops, homework and lessons) should be submitted on Blackboard before due dates,
it is the student responsability to check if your submission is fully previewed by blackboard, otherwize
the teacher won't be able to read and score the assignment. There is always a second chance to
submit assignments, the teacher will grade the second one if exist.
● Late homework, classwork or quizzes will have 5 points penalty. Late quizzes may be given up to 15
days after the duedate.
● Most of the class activities will require IBM-SPSS V.25 (or greater) or Microsoft Excel installed in your
personal computer.
● It is extremely important that you stay focused during class, do not stay behind. Try always be one
step forward.
● It’s ok to fail in class, do not feel scared to ask questions.
● Phones are not allowed, keep it inside your pocket.
● Caps, Flip Flops, shorts, mini-skirts, sunglasses are not allowed.
● Do not eat during classes.
● Drinks allowed in bottle or thermos.
● Attendance will be taken at random. Only 5 absences are allowed. Absences cannot be justified. Be
careful, that is your own responsability.
● Final Project. Run a course project survey (Triola, p743) to answer the following questions:
1. When people “randomly” select digits (as in Question 2), are the results actually random?
2. Do the last four digits of the Identification number appear to be random?
3. Do males and females carry different amounts of change?
4. Do males and females have different numbers of credit cards?
5. Is there a difference in pulse rates between those who exercise and those who do not?
6. Is there a difference in pulse rates between those who smoke and those who do not?
7. Is there a relationship between exercise and smoking?
8. Is there a relationship between eye color and exercise?
9. Is there a relationship between exercise and the number of hours worked each week?
10. Is there a correlation between height and pulse rate?
