Structural Analysis - Assignment

1. What is Beam?

A beam is a structural element that primarily resists loads applied laterally to its axis. Its mode of
deflection is primarily by bending. Beams are commonly used in construction to support loads from
floors, roofs, and walls.

Types of Beams

1. Simply Supported Beam - Supported at both ends and free to rotate.

2. Cantilever Beam - Fixed at one end and free at the other.
3. Fixed Beam - Fixed at both ends.
4. Continuous Beam - Extends over more than two supports.
5. Overhanging Beam - Has one end extending beyond the support.

2. What is Load?

Load refers to the forces or other actions that result from the weight of building materials, occupants
and their possessions, environmental effects, and other factors. Loads are applied to structures to
ensure they can withstand them safely.

Types of Loads

1. Dead Load - Permanent loads due to the weight of structural elements.

2. Live Load - Temporary or movable loads like people and furniture.
3. Environmental Load - Includes wind, snow, earthquake forces, etc.
4. Point Load - Load applied at a single point.
5. Uniformly Distributed Load (UDL) - Load spread evenly along the length of a member.

3. What is Support?

A support is a structural element that holds a beam or other structure in place. It transfers the
applied loads to the foundation or other supporting structures.

Types of Supports
Structural Analysis - Assignment

1. Fixed Support - Restrains movement in all directions and rotation.

2. Pinned Support - Allows rotation but not translation.
3. Roller Support - Allows rotation and horizontal translation but not vertical movement.
