Problem Statement

I cannot help but express my excitement that I have always been interested in the use of science and
technology together and that the intersection of Science to Technology has always been something I have
wanted to study in academia and professionally. The pace of change around data science and artificial
intelligence is nothing short of extraordinary, and its implications for virtually all areas of science have
cemented my resolve to pursue further specialization in this area. Having recently graduated with a degree
in Computer Science Engineering, and acquired experience utilizing applied machine learning, data
science, and deployment automation tools, I am excited to be a part of scientific advancement through AI
approaches and experimentation.
When it comes to my personal exploration of data science and artificial intelligence, I have developed my
exposure in undergraduate courses and sharpened the experience in the real world through projects and
internships. I am utterly mesmerized at how the impressive technologies have the capacity for unlocking
secret insights in very large and very complex data sets, solving questions, and problems that were
previously considered impossible or "unsolvable", as they are very frequently associated with no single
solid empirical truth. Or at the very least, solutions or learning that would not have a reliable attachment
to real world outcomes. By far, my specific interest is in their application in predictive models, scientific
models, and insight-based decision making approaches. It is hard to imagine areas of application and
societal benefit that would not be relevant, from optimization-based healthcare or health outcomes,
economic or finance predictions, amongst other applications in science and technology.
The data science and artificial intelligence in science MSc excites me for a variety of reasons, including
its strong balance between theory and application, and interactive research development. I would like to
further enhance my knowledge of advanced learning algorithms and statistical modeling and practice how
to incorporate AI solutions into scientific research responsible.
Throughout my undergraduate program at Gitam Deemed to be University, I undertook several
research-intensive endeavors that solidified my skills in machine learning, data analysis, and scientific
computing.
Gold Price Forecasting Using Time Series and Machine learning models: I designed and constructed a
dual model structure that used SARIMA-based models to detect temporal based patterns and Random
Forests methods to capture nonlinear associations. The model allowed for precise temporal based price
predictions as well as added value to the analysis of macroeconomic trends. The project required
advanced data cleaning, selection and validation of models, as well as knowledge of Python-based data
science libraries such as Scikit-learn, and Statsmodels. Agriculture Commodity Price Prediction Using
LLMs and diffusion models: I led a project to improve a prediction framework that fuses large language
models (LLMs) with diffusion models to predict agricultural commodity prices. By improving prediction
rates by 20%, our team provided a clear demonstration of the impact of transformer-based architectures
on predicting time series, and economic data, in a variety of domains. The project required extensive
experimentation with PyTorch, scikit-learn, and provided additional immersion in ML pipeline design and
evaluation.
Handwritten Digit Recognizer: For a robust computer vision system to classify handwritten digits, I
examined diverse neural network architectures using TensorFlow and Keras. The learning from this
project deepened my understanding of deep learning fundamentals, computer vision, and data
augmentation, and produced a digit recognizer with a friendly GUI interface.
My research mindset was additionally reinforced through internships:
At Google for Developers, I trained and deployed classification models, integrated modern tools like
Keras, TensorFlow, and [Link], and used performance monitoring dashboards with Looker Studio.
During my time at CISCO, I was able to apply my skills towards backend development and automate
CI/CD workflows, which ultimately became important to my work, meaning that I was able to take my
ML research and build a practical and scalable application.
Beyond those projects, I also created dashboards and analytical tools that helped me to produce actionable
insights like the Campaign Performance Hub that is meant to help in capitalizing the market on marketing
spend, using Power BI and Excel. Each of those experiences involved critical data analysis, developing
validation methodologies, and translating outcomes to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Although my academic career focused mainly on high impact applied projects, I have yet to submit
documented academic papers. I am in the process of documenting my undergraduate research
(specifically about gold price forecasting and commodity prediction) as a manuscript that will be
submitted to reputable conferences and journals.
I showed both commitment to academic learning and commitment to service when I:
i) presented project outcomes to faculty and to student audiences,
ii) organized and ran peer mentorship programs that developed research skills among junior students,
iii) oversaw campus clubs and technical competitions like the Vulcan Computer Club web design contest.
Additionally, my Cybersecurity (CISCO) and Artificial Intelligence (IBM) certifications also demonstrate
my willingness to learn and help others learn to serve the scientific community. My aim is to generate
original research that contributes to both the fundamental AI/ML science and the application of AI/ML to
help solve societal and scientific grand challenges. I know that the data science and artificial intelligence
in Science MSc will give me a grounding and opportunity to reflect on my experiences, be exposed to
interdisciplinary research, and connect with mentors that can help me achieve my aim. I look forward to
working with world-class faculty and peers, contributing to important ongoing department projects, and
taking advantage of world-class computational resources for the development of the future and my
contribution towards it.
I possess practical experience, a successful history of research, and the determination to advance the field
of artificial intelligence in pursuit of scientific advancement. I believe this graduate program will be an
important landmark in my journey as I not only apply the pioneering design of an AI application to solve
real-world practical problems, but in the pursuit of the very reason why I developed a passion for
technology and science in the first place.
