Fluid Mechanics and Rate Processes

Tutorial-3

Ques 1. The velocity in a steady flow in a Cartesian coordinate system is given as v=6xî + (4y+10)ĵ
+ 2tk̂. What is the path-line of the particle which is at (2,6,4) at time t=2s.

Ques 2. A two-dimensional unsteady velocity field is given by u =x(1+2t), v =y. Find the equation
of the time-varying streamlines that all pass through the point (x0 , y0 ) at some time t. Sketch a few
of these.

Ques 3. Tests on a sphere are conducted in a wind tunnel at an air speed of Uo . The velocity of
3
flow toward the sphere along the longitudinal axis is found to be u= –Uo (1 – rxo3 ), where ro is the
radius of the sphere and x the distance from its center. Determine the acceleration of an air particle
on the x-axis upstream of the sphere in terms of x, ro , and Uo .

Ques 4. A two-dimensional velocity field is given by u = 5 m s−1 and v = -2t m s−1 , where t is time.

a. Sktech streakline at t= 5s. Dye particles are released from (0,0) after every other second.

b. Sktech pathline for a particle from at t= 0s to t= 5s. Particle is released from the same point
as the dye source.

c. Sketch streamlines at t =5s.

Ques 5. A circular plate of 1 m diameter is pushed coaxially towards another circular plate below
it, at a speed of vp which may vary with time. What is the velocity V of the fluid at the exit when
the gap between the plates is h. Given ρoil = 800 kg m−3 .
