ABSTRACT
This study investigates the impact of the economic situation in Nigeria on students'
academic performance, focusing specifically on the University of Ilesa. Economic
challenges, including inflation, unemployment, and inadequate funding for education,
pose significant obstacles to students' learning experiences. The research employs a
descriptive and inferential statistical approach, utilizing a sample of 100 respondents
selected through simple random sampling from five faculties. A survey questionnaire was
administered to gather data on students' academic performance and perceptions of
economic factors affecting their studies. Descriptive statistics, including mean, standard
deviation, and percentage, were used to analyze the research questions, while Pearson
product-moment correlation was employed to test the hypotheses at a 0.05 level of
significance. A pilot study confirmed the reliability of the instrument, yielding a high
reliability coefficient of 0.87. The findings of this research are anticipated to contribute to
a deeper understanding of the interplay between economic conditions and academic
performance, providing valuable insights for policymakers, educators, and stakeholders
in the Nigerian educational sector.
