What to Expect in Grade 2
Term 1
Dear Parents,
Welcome to Grade 2! This term promises to be an exciting journey filled with engaging learning
experiences across various subjects. Below is an overview of what your child will explore and the skills
they will develop:
Mathematics
In Mathematics, students will build foundational skills in::
● Place Value and Number Sense: Understanding 3-digit numbers, grouping hundreds, tens,
and ones, and comparing numbers up to 1000.
● Patterns and Sequencing: Identifying and completing number patterns up to 1000.
● Addition and Subtraction: Solving problems within 1000, using bar models, column method
and tackling word problems.
● Multiplication Foundations: Learning equal groups, repeated addition, and basic
multiplication concepts.
● Problem-Solving Skills: Visualising solutions using pictures and models for addition,
subtraction, and multiplication.

We’ll focus on nurturing reading, writing, and grammar skills:
● Sentence Structure: Writing sentences with correct structure and identifying different types of sentences.
● Reading and Comprehension: Identifying main ideas, predicting outcomes, and answering questions from
texts.
● Grammar: Identifying common, proper, countable and uncountable, singular and plural nouns; using
adjectives, adverbs, and pronouns effectively.
● Creative and Functional Writing: Writing weekend news, personal experiences, and descriptive sentences.
● Punctuation: Learning and applying punctuation marks like full stops, exclamation marks, and question
marks.
● Phonics: Revision of Grade 1 phonics and sounds.
Afrikaans (First Additional Language)
We’ll develop Afrikaans speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills through:
● Speaking and Listening: Exploring family vocabulary, counting to 10, and learning rhymes.
● Reading and Comprehension: Reading short stories, rhymes, and poems; answering questions
about content.
● Writing: Practicing the Afrikaans alphabet and number names.
● Vocabulary Development: Grouping words by theme and labeling pictures, learning CVC words.
Science
In Science, students will explore the natural world and its processes:
● Habitats and Environments: Learning about habitats, caring for the environment, and the 3 R’s (Reduce,
Reuse, Recycle).
● Weather and Seasons: Understanding weather patterns, extreme weather, and how seasons impact life.
● Rocks and Soil: Discovering types of rocks, soil composition, and their uses.
● Materials and Resources: Identifying natural and man-made materials and their transformations.
History & Geography
We’ll journey through fascinating historical events and figures, and students will learn to appreciate
the world around them:
● History Topics:
○ The Titanic: Exploring the story of the Titanic and the lessons it teaches about leadership and compassion.
○ Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot: Learning about Bonfire Night and discussing the concepts of heroes
and villains.
○ The Great Fire of London: Studying its causes, consequences, and advancements in fire safety.
● Geography Topics:
○ Weather Patterns: Observing how weather changes daily and seasonally.
○ The Four Seasons: Exploring how seasons affect human activities, plants, and animals.
○ Extreme Weather: Understanding the effects of blizzards, droughts, and sandstorms.
○ Climate Zones: Comparing weather in different regions and how it influences daily life.
