Introduction to BWP (Bandwidth Part)
BWP, short for Bandwidth Part, is a core technical component in the 5G New Radio (NR) standard,
defined by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) to optimize bandwidth utilization,
device power efficiency, and compatibility across diverse user equipment (UE) types. It enables
flexible management of the 5G carrier bandwidth, addressing key challenges in 5G network
deployment and operation.
1. Core Definition
In 5G NR, a "carrier" (the frequency resource allocated for 5G communication) can span a very
wide bandwidth (up to 100 MHz in Sub-6 GHz bands and 400 MHz in mmWave bands). However,
not all UEs (e.g., low-cost IoT devices, old smartphones) support such large bandwidths, and
continuously using full bandwidth would waste power for UEs with limited needs.
A BWP is a contiguous subset of the 5G carrier’s total bandwidth that is dynamically assigned to a
UE by the network. The UE only needs to monitor, transmit, and receive data within its assigned
BWP—eliminating the need to process the entire carrier bandwidth.
